SLADC Chandanasawaya is named for chandana, white sandalwood (Santalum album, sudu handun), and is made as an asawaya, a traditional fermented herbal liquid. The corporation's list also names nut grass (Cyperus rotundus, kalanduru), Oroxylum indicum (thotila), water lily (Nymphaea nouchali, given by the maker as nelum), licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra, wel mee), grapes (Vitis vinifera, muddarappalam) and fire-flame bush (Woodfordia fruticosa, malitha).
Fermentation produces a little natural alcohol, 5 to 6 percent according to the maker. There are two bottle sizes, 375 ml and 750 ml.
The Sri Lanka Ayurvedic Drugs Corporation (SLADC) is Sri Lanka’s state-owned maker of Ayurvedic medicines, at Navinna in Maharagama since 1969. Ask a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before use.
