Question 1

What is Nymphoides hydrophylla used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine, Nymphoides hydrophylla is used in traditional formulations addressing fever, skin conditions, and inflammatory complaints. Its cooling properties are cited in indigenous medical literature. Clinical pharmacological research on the species is still developing, but traditional use is well documented within Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant catalogue.

Question 2

Where does Nymphoides hydrophylla grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in shallow freshwater habitats including village tanks, paddy-field margins, slow-moving rivers, and coastal backwaters across Sri Lanka's lowland wet and dry zones. It is particularly associated with the island's ancient tank-irrigation landscapes.

Question 3

Is Nymphoides hydrophylla the same as a water lily?

Accepted Answer

No. Although the floating leaves of Nymphoides hydrophylla resemble water lily pads, the two plants belong to entirely different families. Nymphoides hydrophylla is in the family Menyanthaceae, while true water lilies belong to Nymphaeaceae. The fringed white or pale-yellow flowers of Nymphoides are much smaller than typical water lily blooms.

Question 4

Is Nymphoides hydrophylla endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is not endemic. The species ranges across tropical Asia including South Asia and Southeast Asia. However, it has been catalogued and used within Sri Lanka's indigenous Ayurvedic tradition for many generations, and the country's Department of Ayurveda formally recognises it in its medicinal plant catalogue.

Question 5

How do I identify Nymphoides hydrophylla in the field?

Accepted Answer

Look for broadly heart-shaped floating leaves, 3–10 cm wide, attached to long stalks rooted in shallow silty water. The small five-petalled flowers are the clearest identifier: they are white to pale yellow with distinctly fringed or hairy petal edges, appearing at the junctions of leaf stalks just above the water surface.

Question 6

What part of the Nymphoides hydrophylla plant is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Traditional Ayurvedic applications primarily draw on the leaves and stems of the plant. These are incorporated into formulations according to classical preparation methods. The roots may also be referenced in some traditional texts, though the aerial parts are most commonly cited.

Question 7

Is Nymphoides hydrophylla a threatened species?

Accepted Answer

The species is not currently considered threatened at a global level given its wide distribution across tropical Asia. Localised threats include wetland drainage, agricultural runoff, and invasive aquatic weeds. Conservation of Sri Lanka's freshwater habitats helps protect populations of this and many other aquatic plants.
