Question 1

What is Nymphoides indica used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine, Nymphoides indica is used for its antipyretic, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties. It appears in traditional preparations for fever, jaundice, and certain skin conditions. It is most commonly used as part of multi-herb compound formulations rather than as a standalone remedy.

Question 2

What does the Nymphoides indica plant look like?

Accepted Answer

Nymphoides indica is an aquatic herb with round, floating leaves and small white flowers with distinctively fringed petals, giving them a snowflake-like appearance. The plant roots in the sediment and keeps its leaves on the water surface via long petioles. It is often mistaken for a miniature water lily due to its similar growth habit.

Question 3

Where can Nymphoides indica be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in Sri Lanka's freshwater wetlands, particularly in shallow irrigation tanks, paddy field margins, and the backwaters of coastal lagoons. It is especially common in the dry zone's ancient tank landscapes in the North Central Province, as well as in wet zone river margins.

Question 4

Is Nymphoides indica the same as a water lily?

Accepted Answer

No, Nymphoides indica belongs to the family Menyanthaceae, while true water lilies belong to Nymphaeaceae — they are not closely related despite superficial similarities. The water snowflake has much smaller flowers and characteristically fringed white petals, which distinguish it clearly from water lilies when viewed up close.

Question 5

Is Nymphoides indica safe to use medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Traditional use of Nymphoides indica is well established within Ayurvedic practice, and preliminary scientific research supports some of its attributed properties. However, clinical data in humans is limited, and the plant should only be used for medicinal purposes under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. The quality and source of plant material are also important, particularly since aquatic plants can absorb pollutants from their environment.

Question 6

Does Nymphoides indica grow outside Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Nymphoides indica has a broad natural range covering tropical and subtropical Asia, including India, Southeast Asia, parts of Australia, and Africa. It is not endemic to Sri Lanka, but the island's Ayurvedic tradition has produced a particularly detailed body of documented traditional knowledge about the plant's medicinal applications.

Question 7

What are the local names for Nymphoides indica in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, Nymphoides indica is known locally as 'Diya Kaduru' or 'Manel' in Sinhala colloquial usage, though naming conventions can vary by region and community. It is sometimes referred to simply as the water snowflake in English-language botanical and horticultural contexts.
