Question 1

What is Barleria mysorensis used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Barleria mysorensis is catalogued among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants, and plants within the broader Barleria genus have been used traditionally to address inflammatory conditions, joint problems, and respiratory ailments. Specific roots, leaves, and bark may be incorporated into herbal preparations. Research into the precise pharmacological properties of this species is ongoing.

Question 2

Where is Barleria mysorensis found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most commonly found in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, growing along roadsides, forest edges, and scrublands. It tends to favour disturbed or secondary vegetation rather than undisturbed primary forest. Its native range extends across southern India and parts of South Asia as well.

Question 3

Is Barleria mysorensis an endemic plant of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Barleria mysorensis is not strictly endemic to Sri Lanka — it is also native to parts of southern India and the broader South Asian region. However, it is formally recognised in Sri Lanka's national catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, affirming its importance within the island's indigenous medical tradition.

Question 4

Which family does Barleria mysorensis belong to?

Accepted Answer

Barleria mysorensis belongs to the family Acanthaceae, a large family of flowering plants. The genus Barleria contains around 300 species, many of which are prickly shrubs found in tropical and subtropical regions. The spine-tipped bracts and tubular flowers are characteristic features of the genus.

Question 5

How does Sri Lanka document and protect its ayurvedic plant heritage?

Accepted Answer

The Department of Ayurveda maintains a national register of medicinal plants and oversees their regulated use. University research institutions conduct pharmacognostic and phytochemical studies on catalogued species. Community-level traditional healers, known as vaidyas, also play an active role in preserving plant knowledge across generations.

Question 6

Can visitors to Sri Lanka learn about medicinal plants like Barleria mysorensis?

Accepted Answer

Yes — botanical gardens, spice gardens, and forest reserve walks across Sri Lanka offer opportunities to encounter the island's medicinal flora. Guided visits to areas like the Sinharaja Forest Reserve or community spice gardens in the hill country can provide direct exposure to plants documented in the ayurvedic tradition.

Question 7

Are there any clinical studies on Barleria mysorensis?

Accepted Answer

Research on the Barleria genus broadly has identified a range of phytochemical compounds including flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, and terpenoids. Studies specifically focused on Barleria mysorensis remain limited in published literature, and most evidence for its medicinal applications is derived from ethnobotanical documentation rather than controlled clinical trials.
