Question 1

What is Vishnukranthi used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Vishnukranthi (Evolvulus alsinoides) is primarily used as a nervine tonic and cognitive support herb in Ayurvedic medicine. It belongs to the category of medhya rasayana — preparations believed to enhance memory and mental clarity. Traditional preparations include decoctions, powders mixed with milk or honey, and oil infusions used in head massage.

Question 2

What does Evolvulus alsinoides look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a low-growing, softly hairy herb that spreads along the ground rather than climbing like most of its Convolvulaceae relatives. It produces small flowers that are typically pale blue to violet, with oval to oblong leaves arranged alternately on slender stems. The entire plant is usually only a few centimetres tall.

Question 3

Where does Evolvulus alsinoides grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, it is most commonly found in the dry and intermediate zones, particularly in open grasslands, roadsides, and the margins of cultivated fields. It favours well-drained, sunny habitats and is less common in the wetter parts of the island. The North Central Province is among the regions where it is regularly encountered.

Question 4

Is Evolvulus alsinoides the same as dwarf morning-glory?

Accepted Answer

Yes — dwarf morning-glory and slender dwarf morning-glory are the most widely used English common names for Evolvulus alsinoides. Unlike true morning-glory vines, it is a non-climbing herb that grows close to the ground. The family connection to morning-glory is evident in the shape and colour of its small flowers.

Question 5

Is Vishnukranthi found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No. Evolvulus alsinoides has a pantropical distribution and grows naturally across tropical and warm-temperate regions of South and Southeast Asia, Australia, Polynesia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Americas. In Sri Lanka it is catalogued as a significant ayurvedic medicinal plant, but it is far from endemic to the island.

Question 6

What research exists on Evolvulus alsinoides?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified alkaloids, flavonoids, and triterpenoids in the plant. Laboratory research has examined potential neuroprotective, antioxidant, and adaptogenic properties, broadly consistent with its traditional use as a cognitive tonic. However, large-scale clinical trials in humans are still limited, and traditional use should not be equated with confirmed medical efficacy.

Question 7

Can I grow Evolvulus alsinoides in a home garden in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The plant is relatively easy to grow in a Sri Lankan home garden, particularly in drier parts of the island. It tolerates poor, sandy soils and prefers full sun. It requires minimal irrigation once established and is occasionally grown in Ayurvedic herb gardens alongside other medicinal species.
