Question 1

What is Barleria cristata used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Barleria cristata is used in Ayurvedic medicine primarily to address respiratory complaints, inflammatory conditions, and fever. Different parts of the plant — roots, leaves, and bark — are prepared in different ways depending on the intended application. Traditional use should always be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Is Barleria cristata native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Barleria cristata is native to a broad region spanning South Asia and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. On the island it grows wild in lowland and mid-elevation areas and is also cultivated in home gardens. It is formally listed in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 3

What does Barleria cristata look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a semi-woody shrub growing to roughly one metre tall, with broadly elliptic leaves and tubular flowers in shades of violet, lilac, or white. The stems are finely hairy and the calyx lobes are distinctively crested, which gives the species its name. It flowers across much of the year in tropical conditions.

Question 4

What active compounds are found in Barleria cristata?

Accepted Answer

Research has identified iridoid glycosides — particularly barlerin and acetyl barlerin — as key bioactive compounds, along with flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolic acids. These constituents are associated with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral activities in laboratory studies, though clinical human trials remain limited.

Question 5

How is Barleria cristata different from Barleria prionitis?

Accepted Answer

Both species belong to the genus Barleria and are found in Sri Lanka, but they are distinct plants. Barleria prionitis typically bears yellow flowers and has spiny stems, while Barleria cristata produces violet to white flowers and lacks prominent spines. Their traditional medicinal applications overlap in some areas but they are not interchangeable.

Question 6

Where can I find Barleria cristata in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows across Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, commonly along forest margins, roadsides, and in rural home gardens. It is encountered in lowland areas and at mid-elevations, often as part of the secondary scrub layer in and around nature reserves and forested areas.

Question 7

Is Barleria cristata recognised by Sri Lanka's government health authorities?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Department of Ayurveda under Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health includes Barleria cristata in its official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants, catalogued under the reference code LK94006997. This recognition supports its regulated use in traditional medicine manufacturing and practice on the island.
