Jetwing Vil Uyana

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

Jetwing Vil Uyana is an eco-luxury retreat of 36 thatched dwellings near Sigiriya, set around a man-made lake among paddy fields, gardens and forest. Built on reclaimed farmland about 7 kilometres from the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, it sets each dwelling into one of its habitats, from timber houses on stilts above the water to two-storey forest villas with their own pools.

Which room should I book?

Every dwelling is built from natural materials such as woven reed and rattan, with air conditioning and fans, a minibar, a satellite television, free Wi-Fi, a safe, an Illy coffee machine and a bathroom with a bathtub and a separate shower. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.

  • Garden Dwelling with Pool – one of five Garden Dwellings, 103 square metres, set among the gardens with a garden view, an open-air lounge and a private plunge pool. Jetwing notes that one family unit in this group shares a pool, so tell us if you want a pool of your own or the family layout.
  • Paddy Dwelling with Pool – one of twelve Paddy Dwellings, 115 square metres, raised above the hotel's own rice fields, with a private deck looking over the paddy, a private plunge pool, and a bathtub and rain shower.
  • Water Dwelling – 115 square metres on stilts above the lake, finished in woven reed, with a large private balcony over the water, lake views and a bathtub and rain shower. There is no private pool in this category; you trade it for the view across the water.
  • Forest Dwelling – one of ten two-storey Forest Dwellings, the largest at 195 square metres, deep in the woodland with separate living, dining and sleeping areas, a courtyard and a large private swimming pool with sun beds.

Jetwing sells every dwelling for two adults. Bookings with us can take up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children, in the Garden, Paddy and Water Dwellings; the Forest Dwelling takes a maximum of two adults, with up to two children. Tell us who is travelling so the hotel can prepare the right bedding.

Where can I eat and drink?

Apsara, the main restaurant, is open-air and looks across the lake towards the rock fortress in the distance, with à la carte and set menus of international dishes and the hotel's own specialities. The Sulang Café is a relaxed spot where you can order from any of the hotel's menus, and the Graffiti Bar, beside a pond of blue lotus, takes its name and look from the ancient paintings on Sigiriya rock. Signature dining includes a traditional meal on a straw mat at the kamatha, the old threshing floor in the paddy fields; a barbecue on the lawn; dinner in the wine cellar or the spa; and a Sri Lankan classical evening with the executive chef on Saturdays.

What is there to do at the hotel?

The grounds are a nature reserve in their own right. The resident naturalist leads an hour-long Loris Night Trail with red-light headlamps to find the grey slender loris, a rare nocturnal primate that lives in the hotel's forest, as well as a nocturnal trail and a daytime wildlife walk; the elusive fishing cat lives here too. There is a swimming pool, a gym and a spa with treatment rooms, a steam room and a plunge pool. Bicycles are available for rides into the surrounding countryside, and there is a library with books and DVDs, a boutique, room service until midnight and a helicopter landing area.

What is nearby?

The Sigiriya Rock Fortress, with its frescoes and summit palace, is about 7 kilometres away, and Pidurangala Rock, about 10.5 kilometres away, gives the best view of it at sunrise. The Dambulla Cave Temple is a short drive away, and the ancient cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura make good day trips. Close by, the Rangirigama birding trail is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see endemic and migratory birds.

Can I go on safari from Jetwing Vil Uyana?

Yes. Minneriya National Park is close by and famous for The Gathering, when hundreds of elephants come together around the reservoir in the dry season. Wilpattu National Park, the island's largest, known for its leopards, is a longer day out.

How do I get from the airport to Jetwing Vil Uyana?

Jetwing puts Sigiriya about five hours by road from Colombo. From Bandaranaike International Airport, north of the city, the hotel is about 124 kilometres in a straight line. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Vil Uyana, which takes you all the way to the door.

Who is Jetwing Vil Uyana best suited to?

It suits couples and nature lovers who want a quiet, private base for the Cultural Triangle, with wildlife on the doorstep and a dwelling that feels part of the landscape. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Sigiriya, or the other Jetwing hotels around the island.
