Lavendish Okrin is a hotel at Detagamuwa on the edge of Kataragama, set in dry-zone forest between the Detagamuwa Tank and the sacred hill of Wedihiti Kanda. Run by Lavendish Leisure, it is a quiet base for pilgrims visiting the temples of Kataragama and for travellers heading into Yala National Park.
There is one category to book with us, and the name below is the one you will see when you book.
Our rate takes up to four adults, or two adults with up to two children, for families and pilgrim groups travelling together; tell us the exact number of people when you book so that the hotel can arrange extra beds. The hotel also has larger suites of around 42 square metres with a king bed and a single and a separate living area; they are not part of our standard rate, so ask us if you would like one.
The multi-storey hotel stands in its own grounds surrounded by forest, with a swimming pool and a separate children's pool in the garden, a restaurant and a lounge. Room service runs around the clock and Wi-Fi is free.
The Kataragama temple complex, dedicated to the god Kataragama and to the Hindu war god Murugan, is one of the few places in Sri Lanka venerated by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the Vedda people alike. Nearby, Kiri Vehera is one of the sixteen great pilgrimage sites of ancient Sri Lanka, and pilgrims bathe in the Menik Ganga before worship. Wedihiti Kanda, held to be the abode of the god Kataragama, rises behind the hotel; the climb to the summit takes about two hours and rewards you with a panoramic view. Sella Kataragama lies a short way upriver. In July and August the town fills for the Kataragama Esala festival.
Yes. Kataragama borders the wild country of the south-east, and Yala National Park, famous for its leopards and elephants, is within easy reach for a morning or afternoon jeep safari. Tissamaharama, with its ancient reservoirs and great stupa, is on the way, so a night or two here fits naturally between the temples and the park.
The hotel is about 181 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport in a straight line, and most of the drive south is on the Southern Expressway. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Lavendish Okrin, which takes you all the way to the door. Small aircraft also use Weerawila Airport, near Tissamaharama.
It suits families and groups making the pilgrimage to Kataragama, and travellers combining the temples with a Yala safari, who want a comfortable, quiet room with a pool rather than a jungle lodge.
