EKHO Surf is a beachfront hotel on the long sandy shore of Bentota, on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, where every room category looks out over the Indian Ocean. Run by EKHO Hotels, it is a low-rise resort built around a seafront lawn and pool, a few minutes' walk from Bentota railway station, with suites, swim-up rooms and balcony rooms facing the water.
Every room is air-conditioned and has an en-suite bathroom with toiletries, a 43-inch smart TV, a minibar and fridge, an in-room safe and free Wi-Fi. The names below are the ones you will see in the booking form; they come from our contract with the hotel and do not always match the names on the hotel's own website, so we explain what each one is.
The Surf rooms are the most direct way to get into the pool, while the balcony categories give you more height and a wider view of the sea. Families who need a third bed should look at the Superior Sea View rooms or a suite.
L'héritage is the main restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as an international buffet or à la carte, with seating indoors and outdoors. Der Café serves speciality coffee, snacks and light meals à la carte, either in its air-conditioned room or out by the pool, and the Comfy Bar pours spirits, beers and wines.
Days here revolve around the beach, the lawn and the pool. The Ayu Spa offers Asian treatments based on aromatic oils and essences, and the hotel also hosts weddings on the beachfront. The beach in front of the hotel is part of the wide strand of Bentota Beach; the Bentota River, with its mangroves and boat trips, meets the sea at the north end of the town.
The hotel lists the Brief Garden, the hillside garden created by Bevis Bawa, at about 8 kilometres, and the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery at about 9 kilometres down the coast. Boat trips on the mangrove-lined Madu River start roughly 19 kilometres to the south, and the mask-carving town of Ambalangoda is a little beyond that. Lunuganga, the country estate of the architect Geoffrey Bawa, is inland of Bentota, and Galle Fort makes an easy day trip at about 70 kilometres.
Yes. Bentota station on the coastal line is only about 200 metres away, and the larger Aluthgama station, is about 1.4 kilometres away. Both are a short tuk-tuk ride from the hotel with luggage.
The hotel is about 85 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, and the drive is around 109 kilometres, usually 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to EKHO Surf, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits couples and families who want an easy beach holiday close to Colombo, with a pool, a choice of restaurants and the sea in view from every room, rather than a small boutique house.
