About this experience
The train journey from Kandy to Ella is widely regarded as one of the great railway rides in Asia. The route cuts through the heart of Sri Lanka's central highlands, passing ridge after ridge of tea plantation, cloud forest, mountain valleys, and hillside villages, with the landscape shifting almost continuously from the moment the train pulls away from Kandy station. It is a journey best measured in scenery rather than hours, and the pace of travel through the hills is unhurried enough to absorb all of it.
Kandy station is a working hub, its platforms busy with travellers of every kind and sheltered by a distinctive ornate canopy of white cast-iron scrollwork supported on dark columns. From here, the line climbs steadily into the highlands on Sri Lanka Railways' Main Line — the same track that has carried passengers and produce through these hills since the era of the tea planting industry. The characteristic blue carriages wind along narrow hillside ledges, cross stone viaducts, and negotiate continuous curves as altitude rises and the temperature drops perceptibly. Train doors remain open throughout the journey, and passengers routinely lean out to photograph the drop into forested valleys below or to feel the cooler upland air. Tickets are available in three classes: first class is air-conditioned with allocated seats and sealed windows; second class has openable windows, fans, and reserved seating; third class is unreserved. The Lakpura arrangement includes second or third class tickets as standard, with a first class upgrade offered on availability at no additional charge.
Ella, the journey's endpoint, sits at an elevation of just over a thousand metres in the Badulla District. The town is small, with a main street of cafés, guesthouses, and small shops, and the surrounding hills give it a cooler, greener character than the lowland towns. The Ella Gap — a natural break in the hill ridge — opens to a view across the southern plains, and several well-known landmarks lie within easy reach: the Nine Arches Bridge, a colonial-era stone viaduct that stands around twenty-four metres above the valley floor without a single piece of steel in its construction, sits just a short walk from the station between Ella and the neighbouring Demodara stop. On arrival, there is time to walk through the town before the day's road transfer continues.
This is a private day tour, meaning the vehicle, the chauffeur guide, and the itinerary are yours alone for the day. The service includes hotel pick-up and drop-off in Kandy, an air-conditioned vehicle for the road transfer portions of the day, and the services of an English-speaking chauffeur guide throughout. The full day runs to around thirteen hours from start to finish.
A practical note for anyone booking: train journey times on this mountain route are subject to variation, and delays are common, particularly in wet weather or during peak travel periods. Advance booking of seats — which this tour handles — is strongly advisable given demand for reserved carriages on this route. Travellers planning a visit should also confirm current service status directly with Lakpura before booking, as the Kandy rail service has been subject to disruption following storm damage, with restoration work ongoing. The Lakpura team will advise on the current operational picture and any adjustments to the itinerary.
