A Sinhala novel by W. A. Silva, issued by Godage International Publishers of Colombo. The text is in Sinhala throughout, so a reading knowledge of the language is needed — there is no English translation or parallel text here.
W. A. Silva — Wellawatte Arachchige Abraham Silva — was one of the Sinhala novelists whose work shaped popular fiction in the first half of the twentieth century. He began publishing while still in his teens, with Siriyalatha, and went on to write Lakshmi, Hingana Kolla, Kele Handha, Daivayogaya, Sunethra and Vijayaba Kollaya, among others. Alongside the novels he worked as an editor, running the magazines Siri Sara and Nuwana and the weekly Lanka Samaya. Kele Handha was the first Sinhala novel to be adapted for the cinema. His house in Wellawatte, Silvermere, is now a museum.
Silva's novels have remained in print in Sinhala long after his death, and readers in Sri Lanka tend to encounter them at school or through family bookshelves rather than through literary fashion. Hadapana belongs to that body of work, and this Godage edition is part of the publisher's continuing programme of keeping the Sinhala literary canon available in affordable form.
This will suit Sinhala readers abroad who want to fill a gap in a home library, students of Sinhala literature working through the early novelists, and anyone building a set of Silva's fiction. Readers who do not read Sinhala should look elsewhere; nothing in the volume is in English.
