Train No. 1005, the Podi Menike — Sinhala for 'Little Maiden' — is a daily inter-city service operated by Sri Lanka Railways between Colombo Fort railway station and Badulla railway station. The journey covers the full length of the Main Line, also known as the Hill Country Line, climbing from sea-level Colombo through a succession of valleys, tunnels, and bridges until the track reaches its highest point deep in the tea-growing highlands. For travellers heading to Ella, this train is the principal means of arrival by rail, and the route it follows is widely regarded as one of the great railway journeys in Asia.
The train runs on modern blue rolling stock and is made up of several carriages offering three classes of travel. First class provides air-conditioned reserved seating. Second class reserved carriages offer assigned seats without air-conditioning, with large opening windows that frame the passing landscape. Third class carriages include both reserved and unreserved accommodation. A buffet counter is available on board. As the line climbs through the hill country, the scenery shifts progressively from the humid lowland plains around Colombo, through the layered tea estates surrounding Kandy, and into the mist-hung ridges and forested slopes of the upper highlands. The route passes across brick and stone viaducts, through long tunnels bored into the hillsides, and along gradients that demanded considerable engineering when the line was first opened during the British colonial era in the nineteenth century.
Ella lies well into that highland stretch, and passengers seated on the correct side of the carriage will find themselves looking across deep valleys and wooded escarpments for much of the approach. The Kandy station — a Victorian-era ironwork structure that appears in Frame 5 of the photographs — is a notable stop en route, and the character of the journey changes noticeably after it, as the gradients steepen and the air cools. The end-to-end run to Badulla takes approximately ten hours; passengers disembarking at Ella will be on board for a considerable portion of that.
Securing a reserved seat on this route requires advance planning. Sri Lanka Railways releases reserved tickets exactly thirty days before the date of travel, and popular classes on popular dates can sell out very quickly after the booking window opens. Lakpura holds a limited allocation of tickets as an SLTDA-accredited tour operator, and from time to time makes additional seats available when cancellations arise. Because tickets are issued against passport details and are non-transferable, accurate passport information for every passenger is required at the time of reservation. Incorrect details may result in a passenger being refused boarding by Sri Lanka Railways staff.
A reservation through Lakpura is processed on the basis of availability, not guaranteed at the moment of payment. If the requested class cannot be secured, every reasonable effort will be made to find a suitable alternative; if a lower class is the only option, the fare difference is refunded automatically. If no suitable seat can be obtained at all, the full payment is returned. E-tickets are typically released approximately six hours before departure, reflecting the fact that the team continues working to confirm seats until the last practicable moment. The departure from Colombo Fort is in the early morning; passengers should confirm the current timetable directly with Sri Lanka Railways before travelling, as schedules are adjusted periodically. Service availability on the line should also be verified at the time of booking, as infrastructure works can affect operations.
