White House Villas is a pair of privately owned three-storey villas perched at the edge of the National Park, beside Birdlake. The setting offers a rare combination of lakeside tranquility and easy access to the lively surf resort of Hikkaduwa, just ten minutes away. Opened in 2008, the property sits at the end of a quiet unpaved road, where the sloping site leading down to the lake has been used to maximum advantage by its designer, architect Rihan Peruma.

The design philosophy is rooted in simplicity. Lofty, light-filled interiors are enhanced by contemporary furniture and a bold use of colour, creating an atmosphere that feels both calm and characterful. High ceilings and natural air flow keep the villas cool, complemented by natural cement floors. Picture windows offer uninterrupted views of the lake, which can be reached at the foot of the gardens, just beyond the private pools. In this way, White House Villas offers a welcome change from the colonial style of beach villas that adorn the nearby coastline.

Accommodation

Each villa rises across three storeys and the two may be rented separately or together — an arrangement well suited to a large family gathering. Together, the villas can comfortably accommodate 12 guests across 6 rooms, with extra beds available for children. Each villa includes three double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a living room, dining room, and kitchen, along with a roof terrace, patio, and verandah.

Activities

A range of indoor and outdoor pursuits keeps guests well occupied throughout their stay. Indoors, there is a television, DVD player, stereo, and a library of books, DVDs, CDs, and games. Outside, the private swimming pool is the natural centrepiece, while the proximity of Birdlake opens up fishing and canoeing. Cycling is also available for those who wish to explore the surroundings at a gentle pace.
