Uga Halloowella is a six-suite boutique hotel in an 1880 tea planter's bungalow near Norwood in the Hatton tea country, looking out over Castlereagh Reservoir. Standing 1,444 metres up in the hills beyond Hatton, the bungalow was built on the Halloowella estate, which Major Lane planted with tea in 1873, and has been restored by Uga Escapes; a 17-metre infinity pool now looks out over the hills.
There are only six suites, two of each kind, and each one has a king-size bed, an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower and his-and-hers vanities, butler service, air conditioning and a ceiling fan, a flat-screen television, a sound system, a safe and in-room tea and coffee. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
With so few rooms, booking two or three suites gives a family or group of friends most of the bungalow to themselves.
The kitchen cooks local and international dishes alongside what Uga calls tea-inspired cuisine, with colonial favourites and traditional Sri Lankan recipes. Signature experiences include dining on the lawn, wine-paired tasting menus and a Sri Lankan afternoon tea, and menus can be adapted to dietary needs.
The bungalow has a 17-metre infinity pool overlooking Castlereagh Reservoir, about 8 kilometres away, and a heated jacuzzi, and the semi-open-air spa offers massages and other treatments, which can also be given in your suite. Around it lies the 252-acre (102-hectare) Halloowella tea estate, with estate walks, cycling through the tea and kayaking on the reservoir. Stage 7 of the Pekoe Trail, a 16.5-kilometre walk through the plantations, starts at Norwood, about 4 kilometres away.
Yes. Adam's Peak, Sri Pada, is about 24 kilometres away, and the climb is one of the excursions the hotel arranges; most people start in the night to reach the summit for sunrise. Closer to hand are the waterfalls of the hill country, including St Clair's Falls and Laxapana Falls, each about 27 kilometres from the bungalow.
Yes. Hatton railway station on the hill-country Main Line is about 6 kilometres away in a straight line, and the scenic train from Colombo or Kandy stops there. Arrange a pick-up from the station in advance.
The bungalow is about 88 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, but the road climbs slowly through the hills, so the drive takes far longer than the distance suggests. The easiest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Uga Halloowella, which takes you to the door.
It suits couples and small groups looking for a quiet, very personal stay in the tea country, with walking, the view and good food at the centre of each day, and climbers planning Adam's Peak who want comfort before and after. For other options in the area see our places to stay in Norwood.
