Poverty forces Susanthi Bodra to work for her family's survival from childhood in rural Orissa, while her friend Nelli disappears into trafficking after fleeing her employer's home. Twenty years later, Nelli remains trapped in a brothel in Nagpur, far from the hamlet and mother who desperately search for her. This novel traces the intertwined journeys of vulnerable women across India's chilli fields and hidden spaces, seeking to reclaim what hunger and circumstance have taken from them.
