A colouring book for children in the primary grades, published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo as part of a series that shares a single title. The books in the series are told apart by the colour of their covers rather than by number, and this is the green one.
The pages give young children shapes, objects, animals and fruit to colour in. Alongside each picture the name of the thing shown is printed in English, so that filling in a drawing and learning the word for it happen together. The intention behind the series is that simple English vocabulary is picked up through the colouring itself rather than taught separately.
That makes it a book for a child who is beginning to hold a crayon with some control and is also beginning to meet English words — at home, or in the early years of school. The appeal is practical: an activity that keeps a small child occupied has a second purpose folded into it, and a parent or teacher can use the printed word as a prompt while the colouring goes on.
M. D. Gunasena & Co. is an established Colombo publisher issuing books in Sinhala and English, with a long presence in schoolbooks and children's titles. Buyers outside Sri Lanka who want Sri Lankan-published early-learning material for a child at home, or families abroad keeping up a link with books from Sri Lanka, will find this a straightforward thing to put in front of a young reader.
If you are collecting several from the series, note that the colour on the cover is the only thing distinguishing one from another, so it is worth keeping track of which you already have.
