Bakamunu Raja

Od6.15 PLN

A story for children about an owl who wants to be king of the forest and does not get the crown, because of the scowl he wears on his face. The lesson the children are left with at the end is a simple one: a pleasant face, rather than a permanently sullen one, brings its own rewards.

The text is in Sinhala throughout, so this is a book for households that read Sinhala with their children, or for families abroad keeping the language alive at home. Readers with no Sinhala will not be able to follow it.

Sybil Wettasinghe was a Sri Lankan writer and illustrator of children's books, and her work has been read by generations of Sinhala-speaking children. Her stories tend to be short, animal-centred and built around a point a young child can grasp without it being laboured, and Bakamunu Raja works in that mode — a small fable with a clear moral, pitched at listeners and early readers rather than older children.
