Question 1

What is Ceylon white tea?

Accepted Answer

Ceylon white tea is a minimally processed tea made from the youngest buds of the Camellia sinensis plant, harvested before they fully open. It is grown primarily in the high-elevation estates of Sri Lanka's central highlands and is known for its light colour, natural sweetness, and low astringency.

Question 2

What is the difference between Silver Tips and Golden Tips white tea?

Accepted Answer

Silver Tips are made from unopened buds covered in fine white down, producing a very pale, delicate cup. Golden Tips undergo a slightly higher-temperature drying process that oxidises the hairs to gold, yielding a marginally fuller flavour while remaining light. Both are premium grades, with Silver Tips generally commanding a higher price.

Question 3

How do I brew white tea correctly?

Accepted Answer

Use water heated to around 70–80 °C — not a full boil — and steep around 2–3 grams of loose leaf tea per 200 ml for two to three minutes. Over-steeping or using boiling water will make white tea taste bitter. Good-quality loose leaf white tea can be infused up to three times.

Question 4

Does white tea have caffeine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, white tea contains caffeine, but typically less than black tea or green tea brewed from the same quantity of leaf. The exact amount varies by grade and infusion time, but most cups of white tea contain roughly 15–30 mg of caffeine, compared with 40–70 mg for a standard black tea.

Question 5

Where can I buy authentic Ceylon white tea?

Accepted Answer

Authentic Ceylon white tea is produced by several well-known Sri Lankan brands including Dilmah, Mlesna, Basilur, and Bluefield, as well as smaller estate producers. Lakpura stocks a range of certified Ceylon white teas, including Silver Tips and Golden Tips grades, which can be shipped internationally.

Question 6

Why is white tea more expensive than black tea?

Accepted Answer

White tea commands a premium because the harvest window is extremely narrow — only the youngest, still-closed buds are picked, often by hand — and the yield per acre is very low. The careful, slow withering process also requires skilled labour and controlled conditions. Together, these factors make white tea one of the most labour-intensive teas to produce.

Question 7

Is white tea good for you?

Accepted Answer

White tea retains a high level of polyphenols due to its minimal processing, and research suggests these compounds have antioxidant properties. It also contains L-theanine, which is associated with calm alertness. However, white tea should be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet rather than as a health treatment.

Question 8

What does white tea taste like?

Accepted Answer

Good Ceylon white tea has a naturally sweet, light flavour with floral or honeyed notes and very little bitterness. The liquor is pale straw to pale gold in colour. Unlike black tea, white tea has no malty or smoky character, making it a good choice for those who find other teas too robust.
