Question 1

What is Semecarpus obovata?

Accepted Answer

Semecarpus obovata is a flowering tree species in the family Anacardiaceae, native to Sri Lanka. It is catalogued as an Ayurvedic medicinal plant and is related to the well-known marking nut tree, Semecarpus anacardium. The species name refers to its obovate, or broadly egg-shaped, leaf form.

Question 2

Is Semecarpus obovata endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is native to Sri Lanka and is recorded in the island's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue. The broader genus Semecarpus is distributed across tropical Asia and the Pacific, but individual species often have restricted ranges. Detailed distributional surveys are needed to confirm its precise endemic status.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Semecarpus obovata in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

The plant is recognised in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, with related species in the genus documented for anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Traditional preparations typically involve processing bark or fruit extracts to reduce caustic resins before therapeutic application. Use should only be undertaken under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 4

Is Semecarpus obovata dangerous or toxic?

Accepted Answer

Like many members of the Anacardiaceae family, Semecarpus species contain phenolic resins that can cause skin irritation or contact dermatitis on direct exposure. Traditional Ayurvedic practice involves careful preparation methods to mitigate these risks. The plant should not be handled or ingested without appropriate knowledge and guidance.

Question 5

Where can I learn about Ayurvedic medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, near Kandy, maintains extensive labelled plant collections including medicinal species. The Department of Ayurveda in Sri Lanka also holds official plant catalogues and resources. Guided ethnobotanical walks in forest reserves and Ayurvedic wellness centres offer further opportunities to learn in context.

Question 6

How many medicinal plants does Sri Lanka have?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's flora includes over 3,000 vascular plant species, with around 26 percent endemic to the island. A significant number of these are used in Ayurvedic, Siddha, Unani, and indigenous Deshiya Chikitsa medical traditions. The country's diverse ecosystems — from coastal lowlands to montane forests — support this exceptional botanical richness.

Question 7

What family does Semecarpus obovata belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to Anacardiaceae, the same flowering plant family that includes cashew, mango, and pistachio. Within this family, the genus Semecarpus is characterised by trees and shrubs with caustic sap and small drupes. The family is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.
