Question 1

What is Olinda Keliya?

Accepted Answer

Olinda Keliya is a traditional Sri Lankan board game belonging to the mancala family, played on a wooden board with two rows of cups using small red-and-black seeds from the Abrus precatorius plant. Players take turns sowing seeds around the board and aim to capture more seeds than their opponent. It has been part of Sri Lankan village culture for centuries and is still actively played today.

Question 2

How do you play Olinda Keliya?

Accepted Answer

Each player controls one row of seven cups on the board. On your turn, pick up all seeds from one of your cups and distribute them one per cup in a counter-clockwise direction. If your final seed lands in an empty cup on your side and the opposite cup contains seeds, you capture those seeds. The game ends when one player cannot make a move, and the player with the most seeds wins.

Question 3

What seeds are used in Olinda Keliya?

Accepted Answer

The game traditionally uses the seeds of Abrus precatorius, a tropical vine known in Sinhala as olinda. These seeds are striking in appearance — bright red with a black spot — and are naturally consistent in size and weight. They contain a toxic compound called abrin, so they should not be ingested, though intact seeds used as game pieces present no practical hazard under normal play.

Question 4

Where can I buy an Olinda Keliya board in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Authentic boards can be found in handicraft markets, cultural shops, and artisan workshops across Sri Lanka, particularly in Kandy and Galle. Lakpura sells Olinda Keliya boards and Ransaru olinda seed packs online, which are properly packaged for international travel. When buying in person, look for boards made from solid hardwood with smoothly hollowed cups and a full set of genuine seeds.

Question 5

What age is Olinda Keliya suitable for?

Accepted Answer

The game is generally suitable for children aged six and above. Young children can quickly learn the sowing mechanic, while the strategic layer keeps older players engaged. It is commonly used in Sri Lankan schools as part of cultural programmes and is a popular family game during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season in April.

Question 6

Is Olinda Keliya the same as mancala?

Accepted Answer

Olinda Keliya is a specific regional variant within the mancala family of games, which includes hundreds of variants played across Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. It is structurally similar to the South Indian game Pallanguzhi and the West African game Oware, but differs in the number of cups, seeds used, and specific capture rules. The mancala family is one of the oldest game families in the world.

Question 7

When is Olinda Keliya traditionally played in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The game is played year-round in homes and community settings, but it is most visibly celebrated during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April, when traditional games are organised at village-level public events across the country. Historically it was particularly associated with women's leisure time in rural Sri Lankan households.
