Question 1

What is Jasminum multiflorum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and broader South Asian ayurvedic traditions, Jasminum multiflorum is used in preparations targeting skin disorders, fevers, headaches, and fungal infections. Leaf pastes are applied topically to ulcers, while root extracts appear in bitter tonic formulations. Medicinal use should always be directed by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Jasminum multiflorum?

Accepted Answer

The plant is commonly referred to as Pichcha (පිච්ච) in Sinhala, a name that encompasses several related jasmine species growing in Sri Lanka. It is also known in English as star jasmine or downy jasmine, the latter referring to the fine hairs covering its stems and leaves.

Question 3

Where can Jasminum multiflorum be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is widespread across the island and is cultivated in home gardens, temple grounds, and along field edges from the coastal lowlands to the lower hill country. Naturalised or semi-wild specimens also appear at the margins of dry-zone forests and scrubland.

Question 4

Is Jasminum multiflorum the same as Jasminum sambac?

Accepted Answer

No. While both are white-flowered jasmine species found in Sri Lanka, they are distinct. Jasminum multiflorum has smaller flowers arranged in denser clusters and noticeably hairy stems and leaves, whereas Jasminum sambac has larger, glossier leaves and is the species most widely used in jasmine garlands for ceremonial purposes.

Question 5

Are there scientific studies on Jasminum multiflorum?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, terpenoids, and glycosides in the plant's leaves and roots, with some in vitro studies reporting antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, large-scale clinical trials in humans are limited, so its therapeutic claims remain within the domain of traditional medicine rather than fully validated pharmacology.

Question 6

How do you grow Jasminum multiflorum?

Accepted Answer

It grows readily from stem cuttings planted in well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded position. The plant is tolerant of heat and occasional dry spells, and responds well to light pruning after each flush of flowers. It can be trained over fences or trellises and requires minimal fertiliser once established.

Question 7

What part of Jasminum multiflorum is used in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Different parts of the plant serve different purposes in ayurvedic practice. Leaves are most commonly prepared as pastes for topical skin applications, roots are used in tonic and antifungal preparations, and flowers are valued for their fragrance and are incorporated into ritual and wellness contexts.
