Question 1

What is Ipomoea littoralis used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Ipomoea littoralis is listed in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants. Related species in the Ipomoea genus have traditionally been used across the Indo-Pacific for inflammatory conditions and skin ailments. Any therapeutic use should be guided by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Ipomoea littoralis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows primarily on sandy coastal shores, dune margins, and the upper fringes of mangrove and estuarine systems. It is most commonly encountered along Sri Lanka's southwestern and northwestern coastlines, often in areas that transition between open beach and sheltered lagoon.

Question 3

Is Ipomoea littoralis the same as beach morning glory?

Accepted Answer

No, though they are closely related. Ipomoea littoralis and Ipomoea pes-caprae (beach morning glory) are both members of the Convolvulaceae family and share similar coastal habitats. They can sometimes be found growing together, but they are distinct species with differences in leaf shape and flower characteristics.

Question 4

How can I learn about Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plants while travelling?

Accepted Answer

Spice and herb gardens in the Kandy region offer guided introductions to medicinal plants, including those catalogued in the ayurvedic tradition. Ayurvedic wellness centres and some eco-lodges also run plant identification walks. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a valuable destination for those interested in Sri Lanka's broader botanical diversity.

Question 5

What plant family does Ipomoea littoralis belong to?

Accepted Answer

Ipomoea littoralis belongs to the Convolvulaceae family, commonly known as the morning glory or bindweed family. This large family includes several hundred species of the Ipomoea genus, ranging from ornamental garden flowers to food crops such as sweet potato.

Question 6

Is Ipomoea littoralis found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No. Ipomoea littoralis has a broad Indo-Pacific distribution, occurring along coastal areas of South and Southeast Asia, parts of East Africa, and Pacific island shores. In Sri Lanka, it is recognised specifically within the national ayurvedic plant catalogue, reflecting local knowledge of its properties.

Question 7

Does Ipomoea littoralis have any ecological value beyond medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes. As a pioneer coastal plant, it helps stabilise loose sandy soils and reduces wind erosion on exposed shorelines. Its flowers attract native pollinators, and its ground-covering growth provides microhabitat for small invertebrates. This makes it a useful component of healthy coastal vegetation belts.
