Question 1

What is Dioscorea tomentosa used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Dioscorea tomentosa is used in traditional ayurvedic practice primarily for its tubers, which are believed to support digestive health, act as a tonic, and contribute anti-inflammatory effects. It is typically used as part of compound herbal formulations under the guidance of trained ayurvedic practitioners, rather than as a standalone remedy.

Question 2

Where does Dioscorea tomentosa grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant typically grows in dry to intermediate-zone forests, rocky slopes, and scrublands at lower elevations across Sri Lanka. It tends to be found along forest margins where it can climb neighbouring vegetation for support, with suitable habitat in areas including the dry zone regions of the country.

Question 3

What does Dioscorea tomentosa look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a perennial twining vine with broad, heart-shaped leaves that are covered with a fine, downy texture on the underside — the characteristic reflected in its species name 'tomentosa'. The plant produces underground tubers with a rough brownish exterior that are the primary part used medicinally.

Question 4

What active compounds are in Dioscorea tomentosa?

Accepted Answer

Like other members of the Dioscoreaceae family, Dioscorea tomentosa is associated with steroidal saponins, including the compound diosgenin, which has been studied as a precursor to synthetic steroid hormones. Tannins, flavonoids, and alkaloids have also been identified in closely related species.

Question 5

Is Dioscorea tomentosa edible?

Accepted Answer

In some regional traditions across tropical Asia, the tubers of Dioscorea tomentosa and related species are consumed as a food source after thorough cooking, which helps neutralise potentially irritant compounds present in raw form. However, it is primarily recognised in Sri Lanka for its medicinal rather than dietary applications.

Question 6

How is Dioscorea tomentosa prepared for medicinal use?

Accepted Answer

The tubers are typically dried and powdered, boiled into decoctions, or processed with other herbs as part of classical ayurvedic compound formulations. Preparation methods vary depending on the intended therapeutic application and are traditionally guided by ayurvedic physicians.

Question 7

Is Dioscorea tomentosa found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, the species is also found in southern India and other parts of tropical Asia, where it appears in Siddha, Unani, and other traditional medicine systems. Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic plant catalog includes it as a recognised medicinal species on the island.
