Question 1

What is Digitaria ciliaris used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In South Asian Ayurvedic tradition, Digitaria ciliaris has been referenced as a cooling agent and as part of compound formulations addressing urinary complaints and fever. In Sri Lanka, it is included in the official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. Its use tends to be as one ingredient within multi-herb preparations rather than as a standalone medicine.

Question 2

Is Digitaria ciliaris native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Digitaria ciliaris is not strictly endemic to Sri Lanka but is widely naturalised across the island. It is a pantropical species found throughout South and Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Americas. In Sri Lanka, it grows commonly on disturbed soils, paddy field margins, roadsides, and open grasslands from the coast up to mid-elevation areas.

Question 3

What does Digitaria ciliaris look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a low-growing annual grass with spreading, sometimes prostrate stems that can root at lower nodes. Leaves are flat, lance-shaped, and fringed with fine hairs along the margins. The flower heads consist of finger-like spikes radiating from a single point, a typical feature of the Digitaria genus. The plant usually reaches 20–80 cm in height.

Question 4

How many medicinal plants are catalogued in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic system?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda recognises several hundred plant species in its official medicinal plant catalogue, reflecting the island's exceptionally high botanical diversity relative to its size. Many of these plants are also found in classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, supplemented by indigenous traditions specific to Sri Lanka.

Question 5

What is the scientific family of Digitaria ciliaris?

Accepted Answer

Digitaria ciliaris belongs to the family Poaceae, the grass family, and the genus Digitaria. The species epithet ciliaris refers to the fringed, hair-edged leaf sheaths that help distinguish it from related species. It is sometimes called tropical crabgrass or summer grass in English.

Question 6

Can Digitaria ciliaris be confused with other crabgrass species?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Digitaria genus contains many similar-looking species and taxonomic revisions have caused historical confusion in the literature. Digitaria ciliaris is most often confused with Digitaria sanguinalis and Digitaria bicornis. Accurate identification requires close inspection of the spikelet structure, leaf sheath hairs, and seed morphology, typically carried out by a trained botanist.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant tradition?

Accepted Answer

The Institute of Indigenous Medicine at the University of Colombo is a key academic centre for Ayurvedic research in Sri Lanka. The Department of Ayurveda under the Ministry of Health publishes official guidelines and plant catalogues. Visitors to Sri Lanka can also encounter living examples of Ayurvedic plant use at traditional herbal gardens and wellness centres across the island.
