Question 1

What is Derris scandens used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine, Derris scandens is used primarily to treat joint pain, rheumatic conditions, and skin disorders. Root and stem preparations are applied for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, while leaf pastes are used topically for wound healing and skin irritations. Trained Ayurvedic practitioners oversee its use due to the potency of its rotenoid compounds.

Question 2

Is Derris scandens found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Derris scandens grows naturally across Sri Lanka, particularly in lowland tropical forests, scrublands, and riverine habitats in the wet and intermediate zones. It is listed in the official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda.

Question 3

What chemical compounds are found in Derris scandens?

Accepted Answer

Derris scandens contains rotenoids (including rotenone), flavonoids, and isoflavonoids. Rotenoids account for the plant's insecticidal and antiparasitic properties, while flavonoids and isoflavonoids contribute antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. These compounds have been the subject of increasing scientific investigation in recent years.

Question 4

What is the Sinhala name for Derris scandens?

Accepted Answer

Derris scandens is commonly known as Aegoda (ඇගොඩ) in Sinhala. In Tamil it is sometimes referred to as Waḷḷi. The plant is recognised under these vernacular names in traditional medical practice across Sri Lanka.

Question 5

Is Derris scandens the same as Derris elliptica?

Accepted Answer

No, they are distinct species within the same genus. Derris elliptica is more widely known commercially as a source of rotenone for use as a natural insecticide, whereas Derris scandens is better known within South and Southeast Asian traditional medicine systems. Both share rotenoid chemistry but differ in growth habit, distribution, and primary applications.

Question 6

How is Derris scandens traditionally prepared as medicine?

Accepted Answer

Preparations typically involve decoctions of the root or stem bark for internal use, and crushed leaf or root pastes for topical application. Because rotenoids can be toxic in large doses, traditional formulations are prepared by qualified vaidyas who adjust dosage according to the patient's condition. Self-medication with Derris preparations is not recommended.

Question 7

Is Derris scandens an endangered plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Derris scandens is not currently classified as endangered; it grows relatively commonly in suitable habitats across Sri Lanka and the wider tropics. However, like many wild-harvested medicinal plants, it faces localised pressure from habitat loss and unsustainable collection. Conservation through cultivated propagation in home gardens and community plantations is increasingly encouraged.
