Question 1

What is Coix gigantea?

Accepted Answer

Coix gigantea is a large tropical grass in the family Poaceae, native to South and Southeast Asia. It is related to the more widely known Coix lacryma-jobi (Job's Tears) but grows considerably taller. In Sri Lanka it is catalogued as a medicinal plant within the national ayurvedic plant registry under the code LK94006003.

Question 2

Is Coix gigantea used in Sri Lankan traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, species within the Coix genus feature in South Asian ayurvedic and traditional medical systems, including Sri Lanka's indigenous Deshiya Chikitsa tradition. Formal cataloguing by the Department of Ayurveda records its recognised role in traditional practice. Use of any ayurvedic plant should always be guided by a qualified practitioner.

Question 3

Where does Coix gigantea grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant favours moist, shaded conditions along stream banks, river margins, and paddy-field edges, particularly in the wet zone and transitional zones of the island. The Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces are among the areas where its preferred riparian habitat is most prevalent.

Question 4

How big does Coix gigantea grow?

Accepted Answer

As its name indicates, Coix gigantea is notably large for the genus. Under suitable conditions — with adequate moisture, warmth, and partial shade — it can reach several metres in height, making it one of the taller wild grasses recorded in Sri Lanka's flora.

Question 5

What is the difference between Coix gigantea and Coix lacryma-jobi?

Accepted Answer

Both species belong to the same genus and share a similar structure, including bony bead-like sheaths enclosing the female florets. Coix lacryma-jobi is smaller, widely cultivated as a cereal and ornamental crop, and commercially traded. Coix gigantea is a larger, predominantly wild species with a more limited distribution and is documented primarily for its medicinal rather than food or craft use.

Question 6

What is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka maintains a formal national registry of plants used in its traditional ayurvedic and indigenous medical systems, coordinated through the Department of Ayurveda. Each catalogued plant is assigned a unique reference code; Coix gigantea carries the code LK94006003. The catalogue documents botanical identity, local names, and traditional medicinal applications.

Question 7

Can I see Coix gigantea on a nature tour in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is possible to encounter Coix gigantea during guided botanical or nature walks in the wet lowlands of southwestern Sri Lanka, particularly along river margins and forested stream corridors. It is not routinely highlighted on mainstream wildlife tours, so a specialist botanical guide or a visit to a dedicated ayurvedic garden would improve the chances of a confirmed sighting.
