Question 1

What is Chonemorpha fragrans?

Accepted Answer

Chonemorpha fragrans is a large woody climbing vine in the family Apocynaceae, native to tropical Asia including Sri Lanka. It is commonly called the frangipani creeper due to its large, white, fragrant flowers. The plant is documented in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue.

Question 2

What are the medicinal uses of Chonemorpha fragrans?

Accepted Answer

In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, the root bark and stem bark of Chonemorpha fragrans are used primarily for their reputed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Preparations from the plant have historically been applied to rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions. Any use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 3

Is Chonemorpha fragrans found in Sri Lanka's wild forests?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the plant grows naturally in Sri Lanka's lowland wet and intermediate zone forests, often climbing neighbouring trees along forest margins. It can also be found in cultivated home gardens where it is valued for both its medicinal properties and its ornamental flowers.

Question 4

Which part of Chonemorpha fragrans is used in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

The root bark and stem bark are the most commonly used parts in Ayurvedic formulations. These are typically dried and powdered or prepared as decoctions. Bark-based preparations may also be incorporated into medicated oils used in therapeutic massage.

Question 5

Is Chonemorpha fragrans related to frangipani?

Accepted Answer

The two plants are not the same species, but Chonemorpha fragrans is called the frangipani creeper because its large white flowers bear a visual and olfactory resemblance to true frangipani (Plumeria). Both belong to the Apocynaceae family, which explains the similarity.

Question 6

Where can I learn about Ayurvedic plants on a trip to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Visitors can encounter medicinal plants through Ayurvedic wellness centres, spice and herb farm tours, and botanical gardens — particularly in and around Kandy and the central hill country. Many resorts across Sri Lanka offer Ayurvedic treatments that introduce guests to the practical side of this healing tradition.

Question 7

Is Chonemorpha fragrans an endangered plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not currently classified among Sri Lanka's critically threatened flora. However, like many forest-dependent plants, it is affected indirectly by habitat loss. Sustainable harvesting practices and cultivation in Ayurvedic gardens help maintain wild populations and supply the herbal medicine sector.
