Question 1

What is Solanum erianthum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, Solanum erianthum is used in preparations targeting fever, inflammation, skin conditions, and respiratory complaints. Leaf poultices are applied externally, while decoctions from the bark and roots are used internally. Its use is based on traditional empirical knowledge rather than modern clinical evidence, and it should only be used under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Is Solanum erianthum native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Solanum erianthum is native to tropical regions of the Americas but has been naturalised across tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka. It grows widely in disturbed habitats, forest margins, and roadsides across the island's low and mid-country zones. Its long presence in Sri Lanka has led to its integration into local ayurvedic and ethnobotanical traditions.

Question 3

What does Solanum erianthum look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a shrub or small tree growing up to around five metres tall, with very large, soft leaves covered in dense star-shaped hairs that give a velvety feel. Question 4

What is the Sinhala name for Solanum erianthum?

The plant is sometimes referred to in Sinhala as Thotila or Gas Thibbatu, though common names can vary by region and community. These local names reflect its familiarity to rural Sri Lankans who have used it in traditional medicine over many generations.

Question 5

Are the berries of Solanum erianthum edible?

Accepted Answer

Question 6

Where can I see medicinal plants like Solanum erianthum in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer
