Question 1

What is Solanum violaceum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and Indian Ayurveda, Solanum violaceum is used primarily as part of the Dashamoola (ten roots) group, valued for anti-inflammatory and restorative properties. Its root is commonly prepared as a decoction for respiratory and febrile conditions, while other parts of the plant appear in formulations addressing digestive and skin-related complaints. It is always used in compound preparations rather than as a standalone remedy.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Solanum violaceum?

Accepted Answer

Solanum violaceum is commonly referred to in Sinhala as Thith-thubbatu or Katu-elabatu. Both names reflect the plant's spiny character — 'katu' meaning thorny — and its visual similarity to other Solanum species used in Sri Lankan cooking and medicine.

Question 3

Where does Solanum violaceum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is widespread across Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, typically at lower elevations. It grows along roadsides, in scrubland, and at the margins of forests in the North Central, Eastern, and North Western provinces. It can often be spotted along rural roads near dry-zone landmarks.

Question 4

Is Solanum violaceum the same as Indian nightshade?

Accepted Answer

Solanum violaceum is closely related to and sometimes confused with Solanum indicum, commonly called Indian nightshade. Both belong to the same subgenus and share medicinal applications within Ayurveda. Taxonomic treatment of these two species varies across botanical authorities, and in some older texts they are treated as synonyms, though current classification generally treats them as distinct species.

Question 5

Are the berries of Solanum violaceum edible?

Accepted Answer

The ripe berries are used in some traditional formulations but should not be consumed raw without proper preparation, as the plant contains alkaloids that can be toxic in unprocessed form. The unripe berries in particular carry a higher alkaloid load. Consumption outside of a supervised Ayurvedic context is not recommended.

Question 6

What does Solanum violaceum look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a spiny shrub growing to roughly one to two metres, with broad, lobed, and hairy leaves covered with sharp yellowish prickles. The flowers are small and purple-blue, and the berries pass through green, yellow, and orange-red stages as they ripen. The combination of prickles, purple flowers, and brightly coloured berries makes it fairly recognisable in the field.

Question 7

Which Ayurvedic medicines contain Solanum violaceum?

Accepted Answer

Solanum violaceum appears as an ingredient in several classical Ayurvedic compound formulations, particularly those in the Dashamoola group used for respiratory, musculoskeletal, and rejuvenation therapies. Specific preparations vary by practitioner and regional tradition. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official formulary that lists approved compounds incorporating this plant.
