Question 1

What is Solanum macrocarpon used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Solanum macrocarpon is used in decoctions, poultices, and compound preparations targeting digestive health, liver function, skin conditions, and respiratory complaints. Different plant parts — leaves, fruit, roots, and seeds — are used for different therapeutic purposes. It should always be administered under the supervision of a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Is Solanum macrocarpon the same as African eggplant?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Solanum macrocarpon is commonly referred to as African eggplant or gboma eggplant in English. It belongs to the same Solanaceae family as the common brinjal but is a distinct species with a larger, rounder fruit and a more pronounced bitter taste. It is valued in both culinary and medicinal contexts across tropical regions.

Question 3

Can I eat Solanum macrocarpon as a vegetable?

Accepted Answer

The fruit and leaves of Solanum macrocarpon are consumed as vegetables in various tropical cuisines. Cooking neutralises much of the bitterness and reduces alkaloid levels. In Sri Lanka, it appears in home gardens where it is used both as food and as a medicinal resource.

Question 4

What active compounds does Solanum macrocarpon contain?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains steroidal alkaloids — including solasonine and solamargine — alongside flavonoids and phenolic acids. These compounds have shown antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in laboratory studies. However, most research is still at the preliminary stage and should not be taken as established clinical evidence.

Question 5

Where can Solanum macrocarpon be found growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows mainly in the lowland wet and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, often in home gardens and smallholdings. It prefers warm, humid conditions with fertile, well-drained soil and is not commonly found at high elevations.

Question 6

What does the catalogue code LK94005753 mean?

Accepted Answer

LK94005753 is the standardised identifier assigned to Solanum macrocarpon in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue, maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. This code allows researchers, practitioners, and herbalists to reference the species unambiguously regardless of regional or common-name variations.

Question 7

Is Solanum macrocarpon safe for everyone?

Accepted Answer

While the cooked fruit is generally considered safe as food, therapeutic use of concentrated preparations — especially of roots or seeds — carries risk due to the plant's alkaloid content. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and people with existing health conditions should consult a qualified Ayurvedic or medical professional before any medicinal use.
