Question 1

What is Solanum erianthum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, Solanum erianthum is used in preparations targeting fever, inflammation, skin conditions, and respiratory complaints. Leaf poultices are applied externally, while decoctions from the bark and roots are used internally. Question 2

Is Solanum erianthum native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Solanum erianthum is native to tropical regions of the Americas but has been naturalised across tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka. Its long presence in Sri Lanka has led to its integration into local ayurvedic and ethnobotanical traditions.

What does Solanum erianthum look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a shrub or small tree growing up to around five metres tall, with very large, soft leaves covered in dense star-shaped hairs that give a velvety feel.
