Question 1

Where exactly is Upaar Lagoon in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Upaar Lagoon is located in the Ampara District of Sri Lanka's Eastern Province, close to the village of Panama and roughly 15–20 kilometres south of Arugam Bay. It lies near the buffer zone of Kumana National Park and is part of an extensive coastal wetland system along this stretch of coast.

Question 2

Are there crocodiles in Upaar Lagoon?

Accepted Answer

Yes, estuarine crocodiles are resident in Upaar Lagoon and are regularly spotted by visitors on boat excursions. They are commonly seen basking on exposed banks or moving through the open water. Always follow your guide's instructions and remain in the boat.

Question 3

What birds can I see at Upaar Lagoon?

Accepted Answer

The lagoon hosts painted storks, black-headed ibis, spoonbills, and multiple species of heron and egret. During the northern-hemisphere winter, migratory shorebirds significantly expand the species count. Early morning visits near the shallows offer the most consistent sightings.

Question 4

How do I get to Upaar Lagoon from Arugam Bay?

Accepted Answer

The lagoon is accessible by road via the coastal route south toward Panama, typically a 20–30 minute drive from Arugam Bay. Most guesthouses in Arugam Bay can arrange tuk-tuks or jeeps for the journey, and local boatmen at the lagoon offer excursions once you arrive.

Question 5

What is the best time of year to visit Upaar Lagoon?

Accepted Answer

April through September is the dry season on Sri Lanka's east coast, making these months the most reliable for travel and wildlife watching at Upaar Lagoon. Lower water levels in the dry season concentrate birds and crocodiles around the shallows, improving sighting chances.

Question 6

Can I kayak or canoe in Upaar Lagoon?

Accepted Answer

Quiet paddling through the lagoon's mangrove channels is possible and offers a close-up view of the vegetation and wildlife. Kayak arrangements are typically made informally through local operators in Arugam Bay or Panama, so it is worth checking availability with your accommodation in advance.

Question 7

Is Upaar Lagoon near Kumana National Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the lagoon lies adjacent to the buffer zone of Kumana National Park, one of Sri Lanka's most important bird sanctuaries. Combining a lagoon excursion with a visit to Kumana is a popular option for wildlife-focused travellers on the east coast.
