Question 1

What is Artocarpus nobilis used for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Artocarpus nobilis is catalogued as an Ayurvedic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka. Traditional practitioners use various parts of the tree, including the bark, root, and fruit, in preparations targeting inflammatory conditions, skin ailments, and digestive issues. It is valued primarily for its therapeutic properties rather than as a food source.

Question 2

Is Artocarpus nobilis endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Artocarpus nobilis is endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world in its wild state. It grows naturally in the wet lowland and sub-montane forests of the island's south-western and central regions, making its conservation directly tied to protecting Sri Lanka's remaining rainforest habitat.

Question 3

What is the Sinhala name for Artocarpus nobilis?

Accepted Answer

Artocarpus nobilis is commonly referred to in Sinhala as 'Hedun' or 'Rath del'. The name reflects its relationship to the broader del (breadfruit) group within the Artocarpus genus, though it is botanically distinct from the cultivated breadfruit species.

Question 4

What is the difference between Artocarpus nobilis and jackfruit?

Accepted Answer

Both belong to the Artocarpus genus and the Moraceae family, but they serve different purposes. Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus, or kos in Sinhala) is widely cultivated for food and timber. Artocarpus nobilis is an endemic wild species valued primarily in Ayurvedic medicine rather than as a food crop, and it is not commonly grown in orchards or gardens.

Question 5

Where can I see medicinal plants like Artocarpus nobilis in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Herb gardens at Ayurvedic resorts and hospitals, particularly in the Kandy and south-western wet-zone areas, often display endemic medicinal plants. Guided rainforest walks in areas such as Sinharaja Forest Reserve also offer the chance to encounter forest-dependent endemic species in their natural habitat.

Question 6

What compounds are found in Artocarpus nobilis?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, prenylated compounds, and stilbene derivatives in Artocarpus nobilis. Some of these have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activity in laboratory research. However, these findings are preliminary, and traditional use involves complex multi-herb Ayurvedic formulations rather than isolated compounds.

Question 7

Is Artocarpus nobilis the same as breadfruit?

Accepted Answer

No. Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis, known locally as del) is a separate species that was historically introduced to Sri Lanka and is cultivated as a starchy food crop. Artocarpus nobilis is a distinct, endemic wild species primarily valued in traditional medicine rather than as a food source.
