Question 1

What is Artocarpus gomezianus ssp. zeylanicus?

Accepted Answer

It is a subspecies of the tropical tree Artocarpus gomezianus that is specific to Sri Lanka. It belongs to the Moraceae family, which also includes breadfruit and jackfruit, and is documented in Sri Lanka's catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants. The subspecies is primarily found in humid lowland and mid-elevation forests rather than in cultivation.

Question 2

Is Artocarpus gomezianus ssp. zeylanicus endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the subspecies zeylanicus is considered endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it is not found naturally anywhere else in the world. Sri Lanka has an exceptionally high rate of plant endemism relative to its land area, and this subspecies is one of many tree species unique to the island.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Artocarpus gomezianus ssp. zeylanicus in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

It is catalogued among Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants, with related Artocarpus species in the broader genus known for anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antipyretic properties. Traditional preparations typically use bark, root, or latex extracts in compound formulations. Specific applications are documented in specialised Ayurvedic and botanical literature.

Question 4

How is Artocarpus gomezianus related to breadfruit?

Accepted Answer

Both belong to the genus Artocarpus within the Moraceae family. Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a widely cultivated food crop, while Artocarpus gomezianus ssp. zeylanicus is a wild forest tree valued primarily for its medicinal properties rather than as a food source. They share a common botanical ancestry and some similar structural characteristics, including milky latex.

Question 5

Where can I see endemic medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Spice and herbal gardens in the Kandy and Matale regions offer guided tours of Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plants. For a more natural setting, the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and other protected lowland forests are home to endemic flora including wild Artocarpus species. Botanical gardens such as the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya also maintain collections of indigenous plant species.

Question 6

Is Artocarpus gomezianus ssp. zeylanicus a threatened species?

Accepted Answer

As an endemic subspecies dependent on Sri Lanka's lowland and mid-elevation forests, it faces pressure from habitat loss and deforestation, risks that affect much of Sri Lanka's endemic flora. A widely published IUCN Red List assessment specific to this subspecies is not readily available, but the conservation of its forest habitat is important for its survival. Supporting responsible ecotourism and forest protection helps safeguard species like this one.

Question 7

What other Ayurvedic plants are found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia includes hundreds of plant species. Notable examples include Acacia chundra, Pongamia pinnata, and Syzygium aromaticum (cloves), as well as many endemic trees found in the island's wet zone forests. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya and various government Ayurvedic research institutions maintain comprehensive records of these species.
