Heritance Ahungalla is Geoffrey Bawa's 152-room beach hotel at the fishing village of Ahungalla, between Bentota and Galle on the south-west coast. From the open lobby the view runs across the pool to the sea, and the long, red-roofed wings, shaded gardens and wide beach make it one of the classic resort hotels of this coast.
Every room has a private balcony or terrace, air conditioning, satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, a minibar, tea and coffee making facilities and 24-hour room service. The names below are the ones you will see in the booking form; this is what each one is at the hotel.
For a family, a Luxury Room or a Suite gives the most space. If you need twin beds, ask when you book.
This is one of Geoffrey Bawa's coastal hotels, designed in his tropical modernist style to frame the sea and let the breeze and light through. The pool, with the hull of an old fishing boat set in it, leads the eye from the lobby to the beach, and the gardens are shaded by big trees and screw pines. The hotel is Travelife Gold certified for sustainability. Read more about the architect on our Geoffrey Bawa page.
Jute is the main restaurant, and the Mustard Coffee Shop serves lighter meals through the day. There are several bars, and the hotel also arranges dining on an island in the Madu River.
The hotel has two pools, one with families in mind and a quieter one for relaxing, a spa for seaside treatments, and the long, open sands of Ahungalla Beach in front. Further afield, the hotel organises boat safaris on the Madu River and whale-watching trips.
The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is a short drive north, and the mangrove-lined Madu River meets the sea at Balapitiya just to the south. The hotel suggests visits to Geoffrey Bawa's country estate at Lunuganga, Bevis Bawa's Brief Garden near Bentota, and the mask workshops and museum of Ambalangoda. Galle Fort is about 38 kilometres away in a straight line, an easy day trip.
The hotel is about 119 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport, a drive down the west coast past Colombo. Ahungalle station on the coastal railway is close by if you would rather take the train. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Heritance Ahungalla, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits couples and families who want a full-service beach resort with architectural pedigree, two pools and plenty to do along the coast. For more choice see our places to stay in Ahungalla, or the other Heritance hotels around the island.
