Heritance, Ahungalla

Ahungalla, Sri Lanka

Heritance Ahungalla is Geoffrey Bawa's 152-room beach hotel at the fishing village of Ahungalla, between Bentota and Galle on the south-west coast. From the open lobby the view runs across the pool to the sea, and the long, red-roofed wings, shaded gardens and wide beach make it one of the classic resort hotels of this coast.

Which room should I book?

Every room has a private balcony or terrace, air conditioning, satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, a minibar, tea and coffee making facilities and 24-hour room service. The names below are the ones you will see in the booking form; this is what each one is at the hotel.

  • Deluxe – the hotel's 93 standard rooms, about 28 square metres (301 sq ft), with a private balcony or terrace and panoramic ocean views. Up to three adults can share, with up to two children.
  • Premier Deluxe – the hotel's Premium Deluxe rooms: 35 rooms of the same size, with more refined interiors and a private balcony looking straight over the beach. Up to three adults, with up to two children.
  • Luxury Room – 15 rooms of about 45 square metres (484 sq ft), with a king-size bed or twin beds, a spacious bathroom with a bathtub and overhead shower, and a large balcony with seating facing the ocean. Up to three adults, with up to two children.
  • Suite – five suites of about 65 square metres (699 sq ft), with a separate sitting area, an ocean-view balcony or terrace and a bathroom with a bathtub or a jacuzzi; if you want the jacuzzi, ask for it when you book. The hotel describes the suites as suited to families or friends, but a third adult should be confirmed with us before you book.

For a family, a Luxury Room or a Suite gives the most space. If you need twin beds, ask when you book.

What makes the hotel special?

This is one of Geoffrey Bawa's coastal hotels, designed in his tropical modernist style to frame the sea and let the breeze and light through. The pool, with the hull of an old fishing boat set in it, leads the eye from the lobby to the beach, and the gardens are shaded by big trees and screw pines. The hotel is Travelife Gold certified for sustainability. Read more about the architect on our Geoffrey Bawa page.

Where can I eat and drink?

Jute is the main restaurant, and the Mustard Coffee Shop serves lighter meals through the day. There are several bars, and the hotel also arranges dining on an island in the Madu River.

What is there to do at the hotel?

The hotel has two pools, one with families in mind and a quieter one for relaxing, a spa for seaside treatments, and the long, open sands of Ahungalla Beach in front. Further afield, the hotel organises boat safaris on the Madu River and whale-watching trips.

What is nearby?

The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is a short drive north, and the mangrove-lined Madu River meets the sea at Balapitiya just to the south. The hotel suggests visits to Geoffrey Bawa's country estate at Lunuganga, Bevis Bawa's Brief Garden near Bentota, and the mask workshops and museum of Ambalangoda. Galle Fort is about 38 kilometres away in a straight line, an easy day trip.

How do I get from the airport to Heritance Ahungalla?

The hotel is about 119 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport, a drive down the west coast past Colombo. Ahungalle station on the coastal railway is close by if you would rather take the train. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Heritance Ahungalla, which takes you all the way to the door.

Who is Heritance Ahungalla best suited to?

It suits couples and families who want a full-service beach resort with architectural pedigree, two pools and plenty to do along the coast. For more choice see our places to stay in Ahungalla, or the other Heritance hotels around the island.
