Question 1

What is the Ambasthala Stupa?

Accepted Answer

The Ambasthala Stupa is an ancient Buddhist monument at Mihintale in Sri Lanka's North Central Province. It marks the spot where the Indian monk Mahinda Thero introduced Buddhism to King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BCE, making it one of the most sacred sites in Theravada Buddhism.

Question 2

How do I get to Mihintale from Anuradhapura?

Accepted Answer

Mihintale is approximately 13 kilometres east of Anuradhapura along the A9 road, about a 20-minute drive. Three-wheelers, taxis, and private vehicles are all readily available from Anuradhapura town. Most visitors combine both sites in a single day.

Question 3

Is there an entry fee for the Ambasthala Stupa at Mihintale?

Accepted Answer

Foreign visitors to Mihintale typically pay a combined site entry fee, though exact amounts can change. It is best to confirm the current rate at the ticket office on arrival or through the Central Cultural Fund's official channels.

Question 4

What is the Poson Poya festival at Mihintale?

Accepted Answer

Poson Poya is the full moon day in June that commemorates Buddhism's arrival in Sri Lanka. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims converge on Mihintale to climb the granite steps by torchlight and pay homage at the Ambasthala Stupa. It is one of the largest religious gatherings in the country.

Question 5

How many steps are there to climb at Mihintale?

Accepted Answer

The main staircase leading up through Mihintale's terraces has around 1,840 granite steps in total across different sections of the hill. Pilgrims count them as a form of merit-making, though casual visitors can take their time and rest at the shaded platforms along the way.

Question 6

What other monuments can I see at Mihintale besides the Ambasthala Stupa?

Accepted Answer

The Mihintale complex includes the Kantaka Cetiya with its intricate carved friezes, the Naga Pokuna rock pool, the Sinha Pokuna lion trough, the cave of Mahinda Thero (Aradhana Gala), and the Maha Seya stupa at the summit. Refectory ruins and ancient hospital remains round out the site.

Question 7

What should I wear when visiting the Ambasthala Stupa?

Accepted Answer

Modest, preferably white or light-coloured clothing is appropriate as Mihintale is an active place of worship. Shoes must be removed before ascending the main staircase. Bare shoulders and very short clothing are considered disrespectful to worshippers.

Question 8

Can I visit Mihintale and Anuradhapura on the same day?

Accepted Answer

Yes, most visitors combine both sites in a full day trip, spending the morning in Anuradhapura's monumental zone and the afternoon at Mihintale, or vice versa. A private vehicle makes logistics much easier, allowing you to move between the two at your own pace.
