Question 1

What is a dana shalawa in Sri Lankan Buddhist tradition?

Accepted Answer

A dana shalawa is an almsgiving hall — a dedicated space within a Buddhist monastery complex where food and provisions were offered to monks and devotees. The practice of dana, or generosity, is one of the foundational virtues in Theravada Buddhism, and large monasteries like Abhayagiri maintained formal infrastructure to support it at scale.

Question 2

Is the Abhayagiriya Dana Shalawa open to tourists?

Accepted Answer

The Abhayagiri complex, including the area of the Dana Shalawa, is open to visitors as part of the Anuradhapura Cultural Triangle precinct. As with most ancient structures at the site, what remains are stone foundations and architectural fragments rather than a standing building. Entry is covered by the standard Cultural Triangle ticket.

Question 3

How old is the Abhayagiri monastery?

Accepted Answer

The Abhayagiri monastery was founded in the 1st century BCE, traditionally attributed to King Vattagamani Abhaya. It grew over subsequent centuries into one of the largest and most internationally connected Buddhist institutions in the ancient world, reaching its peak between roughly the 2nd and 8th centuries CE.

Question 4

Can I visit Abhayagiri and Anuradhapura in a day trip from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

A day trip is possible but demanding given the roughly four-to-five-hour drive each way. Most travellers find it more rewarding to stay at least one night in Anuradhapura, which allows for an early morning start at the monuments and time to explore multiple sites within the sacred precinct without rushing.

Question 5

What other monuments are near the Abhayagiriya Dana Shalawa?

Accepted Answer

The Abhayagiri precinct contains several significant monuments in close proximity, including the Abhayagiri Dagoba, the Ratnaprasada with its celebrated moonstone carvings, the Eth Pokuna tank, and various image houses. The broader Anuradhapura sacred precinct also includes the Sri Maha Bodhi tree and the Ruwanwelisaya dagoba, all within cycling distance.

Question 6

What is the best way to get around the Anuradhapura sacred precinct?

Accepted Answer

Cycling is the most practical and popular way to explore the precinct, as the main monuments are spread across a wide area but connected by reasonably flat paths. Bicycle hire is available near the entrance gates. Tuk-tuks are a convenient alternative, particularly in the midday heat.

Question 7

What should I wear when visiting the Abhayagiri complex?

Accepted Answer

Modest dress is expected throughout the Anuradhapura sacred precinct. Shoulders and knees should be covered, and shoes must be removed when entering active shrines or image houses. Light, breathable natural fabrics are advisable given the heat of the dry zone climate.

Question 8

Is Anuradhapura a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Sacred City of Anuradhapura was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982. It is recognised for its outstanding universal value as the ancient capital of Sri Lanka and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, encompassing dozens of ancient monuments including the Abhayagiri complex.
