Goatfell is a former estate manager’s bungalow on Concordia Estate at Kandapola, now an intimate four-bedroom retreat. It sits on a hilltop among tea bushes, gardens and forest in the central highlands, and stays cool all year. Covered verandas, a log fire in the sitting room and an infinity pool facing the mountains set the tone. Butlers and all-inclusive dining mean there is little to organise. The Pekoe Trail is 1.5 km away, and Nuwara Eliya about 40 minutes by road.
The bungalow is about 170 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, around 5.5 hours as the road climbs into the hills. Nanu Oya railway station, the stop for Nuwara Eliya, is 20 km (45 minutes) away, and Lake Gregory 16 km. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Goatfell.
All four bedrooms are spacious and private, furnished in natural tones with a mix of hand-sourced antiques and custom contemporary pieces. The three Concordia Double Bedrooms (40 sqm) have king beds, baths and private verandas with garden views. The Concordia Twin Bedroom (42 sqm) has twin beds and a sitting area. Rooms have heaters rather than air conditioning, which the climate makes unnecessary, plus tea and coffee, a safe and Wi-Fi.
A typical day starts with a hearty breakfast, followed by a “Planter’s Lunch”, afternoon tea in the garden and an à la carte dinner indoors or on the veranda. Much of the produce comes from the surrounding countryside and the vegetable patch right outside the restaurant. Drinks are mixed by the butlers, and sundowners are served by the fire pit. Guests booking in US dollars also receive a USD 50 credit for in-house experiences.
The hotel arranges guided or self-guided tea estate walks and a tea factory tour; Pedro Estate is close by. It can also organise a trek across Horton Plains National Park with a naturalist, a cookery session with the chef, and a round at the historic Nuwara Eliya Golf Club. The bungalow can host intimate weddings of up to 30 guests, as well as small retreats.
