Question 1

What is Ficus nervosa var. nervosa used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurveda, Ficus nervosa var. nervosa is catalogued as a medicinal plant with uses consistent with the broader therapeutic applications attributed to the Ficus genus, including astringent and anti-inflammatory preparations. Bark, leaves, and latex from related fig species are used in formulations for skin disorders and wound care. Specific applications in classical texts draw on the plant's categorisation within traditional Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia.

Question 2

Where can Ficus nervosa var. nervosa be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species occurs across lowland and mid-elevation forests, forest margins, and areas of seasonal moisture throughout Sri Lanka. It is present in both wet zone and intermediate zone forests, and can sometimes be found near temple grounds where fig trees have historically been protected for cultural reasons.

Question 3

Is Ficus nervosa the same as the Bo tree or banyan?

Accepted Answer

No. While Ficus nervosa var. nervosa belongs to the same genus — Ficus — as the sacred Bo tree (Ficus religiosa) and the banyan (Ficus benghalensis), it is a distinct species. Its distinguishing feature is the strongly pronounced leaf venation implied by the species name nervosa.

Question 4

What does the official catalogue code LK94006143 refer to?

Accepted Answer

LK94006143 is the reference code assigned to Ficus nervosa var. nervosa in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants, maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. This code confirms the plant's formal recognition within the national traditional medicine system.

Question 5

What phytochemicals have been identified in Ficus nervosa?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical investigations into the Ficus nervosa complex have identified triterpenoids and flavonoids, compound classes commonly associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory studies. This provides a partial scientific basis for the plant's traditional uses, though clinical research specific to this variety remains limited.

Question 6

Is Ficus nervosa var. nervosa an endangered species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not currently considered threatened in Sri Lanka. Its relatively wide distribution across the island's forest ecosystems and its tolerance for varied habitats contribute to a stable presence, though continued forest protection benefits all native tree species including this one.

Question 7

How can I learn more about Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants as a traveller?

Accepted Answer

Visitors can explore Sri Lanka's medicinal plant heritage through guided forest walks, Ayurvedic centres, and herbal gardens affiliated with traditional medicine institutions. Some eco-lodges in the wet zone offer walks specifically focused on identifying and understanding local medicinal species. Spice gardens in the Kandy and Matale regions frequently include labelled medicinal trees and herbs.
