Question 1

What is Ficus arnottiana used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic medicine, Ficus arnottiana is used for its bark, leaves, latex, and fruit. Traditional applications include treatments for skin disorders, digestive complaints, wound healing, and oral health. Bark decoctions are valued for their astringent properties, while the latex has been used topically.

Question 2

Where does Ficus arnottiana grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ficus arnottiana is primarily found in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, including the North Central and North Western provinces. It grows on rocky hillsides, forest margins, and near ancient irrigation structures. It is adapted to low-rainfall environments and can establish itself in thin or rocky soils.

Question 3

How do I identify Ficus arnottiana?

Accepted Answer

The most reliable field identifier is its pale, smooth, whitish bark, which distinguishes it from other Sri Lankan fig species. It is a medium to large tree with a spreading canopy and produces small figs typical of the genus. Local names include Attikka in Sinhala.

Question 4

Is Ficus arnottiana an endangered species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ficus arnottiana is not currently listed as a globally threatened species, though dry-zone forest habitats in Sri Lanka have faced pressure from agriculture and development. As a native species with ecological importance as a food source for wildlife, its conservation is linked to the protection of dry-zone forests.

Question 5

What is the Sinhala name for Ficus arnottiana?

Accepted Answer

Ficus arnottiana is commonly known as Attikka in Sinhala. It may also appear under related vernacular names depending on the region of Sri Lanka. The tree belongs to the same fig genus as the sacred Bo tree, which gives the broader genus strong cultural resonance in Sri Lanka.

Question 6

Are there scientific studies on Ficus arnottiana's medicinal properties?

Accepted Answer

Yes, phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, tannins, and triterpenoids in Ficus arnottiana bark and leaf extracts, with research suggesting anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. However, comprehensive clinical trials are limited, and the plant's formal status remains that of a traditionally validated ayurvedic species rather than a fully modern evidence-based medicine.

Question 7

Which Sri Lankan national parks can I visit to see native medicinal plants in their natural habitat?

Accepted Answer

Wilpattu National Park and other dry-zone reserves are good destinations for observing the natural habitat where Ficus arnottiana grows. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, while a wet-zone rainforest, harbours a different range of medicinal flora and is excellent for botanical interest. Guided naturalist tours in these parks sometimes include commentary on medicinal plant use.
