World's End, Sri Lanka

World's End is one of the most dramatic natural features in Sri Lanka — a sheer escarpment on the edge of the Horton Plains that drops nearly a kilometre straight down. Standing at the rim, visitors are rewarded with glorious views in every direction, a perspective that captures the vast sweep of the Central Highlands in a single, breathtaking moment.

Horton Plains, elevated more than 2,000 metres above sea level, is a designated World Heritage Site. The plateau's altitude and ecology make it a place apart, and World's End is its most celebrated vantage point.

When to Visit

Timing is everything at World's End. The escarpment should be visited early in the morning, before the mist rolls in and obscures the view. Once the cloud settles, the dramatic drop and the landscape below can disappear entirely behind a wall of white.

What You Can See

On a clear morning, the views from the edge stretch all the way to the southern coast of Sri Lanka — a remarkable range of visibility across the island. On virtually any day, the large lake at Uda Walawe National Park is also visible from the escarpment, offering a striking landmark in the lowland plains far below.
