Club Hotel Dolphin

Negombo, Sri Lanka
★★★★

Club Hotel Dolphin is a large beachfront resort at Waikkal, just north of Negombo and 21 km from the airport, with rooms and villas set around a long pool. Run by Brown's Hotels, it is a sociable, family-friendly hotel with two restaurants, a spa, a kids' club and a long list of sports, and its closeness to the airport makes it an easy first or last night of a trip.

Which room should I book?

All rooms have air conditioning and a ceiling fan, a television, a mini fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a furnished balcony or terrace. The names below are the ones you will see when you book; some come from our contract with the hotel and differ slightly from the names the hotel uses itself.

  • Superior Sea Side – the hotel's Superior room in the wings facing the sea: 37 square metres with a king-size bed or twin beds, a walk-in shower and a furnished balcony with sea views. It sleeps up to three guests. Say when you book whether you want a double or twin beds.
  • Superior Poolside Terrace – the same 37-square-metre Superior room on the ground floor, with a furnished terrace that opens straight onto the pool, and views of the pool and the beach. These rooms are designed to accommodate guests with limited mobility, so ask for one if that matters to you. Up to three guests.
  • Superior Family – a 37-square-metre sea-facing room with a furnished terrace, in-room Wi-Fi and a safe, set up for families. Book it when there are four of you; it takes up to four people.
  • Garden View Villa – a free-standing 44-square-metre villa, separate from the main wings, with a king-size bed, a walk-in shower, a furnished private terrace looking onto the gardens, and bathrobes. Up to three guests.
  • Sea View Villa – one of 16 free-standing 44-square-metre villas on the beachfront, with a furnished terrace facing the sea and bathrobes. Up to three guests.
  • Junior Suite – one of only two suites, on the second floor with ocean views: 74 square metres with a separate sitting and dining area with a sofa, a bathroom with a bathtub and a separate shower, a furnished terrace and bathrobes. Up to three guests.

What is the food like?

There are two restaurants. Sands serves Sri Lankan cooking, while Waves serves international and fusion dishes from an open kitchen, within sound of the sea. A snack bar covers the hours between meals with local bites, and the hotel's bars are known for a cold drink at sunset over the Indian Ocean.

What is there to do at the hotel?

The pool is the centre of the resort, with loungers on the lawns and a water slide for children, and the beach is right in front of the hotel. The Ayuwása wellness centre offers spa treatments, and there is a fitness centre. For the active there are tennis courts, a squash court, badminton, table tennis and mountain bikes for hire; indoors you will find billiards and snooker, a mini library and the Anchor Theatre. Children have their own kids' club.

What is nearby?

Waikkal is a quiet stretch of the west coast between the sea and the Dutch-era Hamilton Canal, which runs parallel to the shore, and boat trips along the canal and on the Negombo Lagoon are popular half-day outings. Negombo town, about 9 kilometres south in a straight line, has a long sandy beach, the lively fish market, the remains of the Dutch fort and the painted ceilings of St Mary's Church. South of the lagoon, the Muthurajawela wetlands are good for birds and boat safaris.

How do I get from the airport to Club Hotel Dolphin?

The hotel is about 21 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport, which makes it a good choice after a long-haul arrival or before an early flight. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Club Hotel Dolphin, which takes you all the way to the door.

Who is Club Hotel Dolphin best suited to?

It suits families who want space, a big pool and plenty to keep children busy, couples who would like a free-standing villa by the sea, and anyone looking for an easy beach stay close to the airport at either end of a tour. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Negombo, or the other Brown's hotels and resorts around the island.
