Question 1

Can you see sea turtles nesting at Koggala beach?

Accepted Answer

Nesting does occur on and near Koggala beach, with activity peaking between November and April. However, witnessing a nesting female requires an after-dark visit and some patience, as turtles come ashore irregularly. Your best chance is to arrange a visit through a local guide or the hatchery staff who monitor the beach nightly during peak season.

Question 2

Is the Koggala sea turtle hatchery open to tourists?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the hatchery generally welcomes visitors during daylight hours, though it is advisable to confirm opening arrangements in advance as schedules can vary. A small entry donation is typically requested. Evening or dawn visits to observe hatchling releases may be arranged with advance notice.

Question 3

How long does a visit to the Koggala turtle conservation project take?

Accepted Answer

Most visitors spend between 45 minutes and two hours at the hatchery, depending on how much time they spend with the educational displays and nursery tanks. If you time your visit to coincide with a hatchling release, allow additional time and arrive at the arranged hour — releases cannot be rushed or delayed.

Question 4

What species of sea turtle can I see at Koggala?

Accepted Answer

Green turtles are the most commonly encountered species at Koggala, both at the hatchery and in nearby waters. Loggerhead and olive ridley turtles are also recorded in the area. Leatherback turtles, the largest sea turtle species, are occasionally sighted offshore but are less commonly seen at hatcheries.

Question 5

Is it ethical to visit sea turtle hatcheries in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Community-run hatcheries that prioritise conservation over entertainment are broadly supported by marine biologists as a practical tool for increasing hatchling survival rates. When visiting, follow the guidelines set by staff — avoid flash photography, do not handle turtles without instruction, and choose projects that release hatchlings in natural conditions rather than keeping them long-term in tanks.

Question 6

Can I snorkel with sea turtles near Koggala?

Accepted Answer

Sea turtles are frequently encountered while snorkelling along the southern coast, particularly around rocky reefs. Several Lakpura-arranged snorkelling experiences in the region offer the opportunity to see turtles in their natural ocean habitat, which complements a visit to the hatchery on land.

Question 7

How close is the Koggala turtle project to Galle Fort?

Accepted Answer

Koggala is approximately 15 kilometres east of Galle Fort, a drive of around 20 to 25 minutes on the coastal highway. The two sites combine conveniently into a single day's itinerary, with the turtle project as a morning or late-afternoon activity alongside a walk through the historic Dutch colonial fort.

Question 8

What is the difference between the Koggala and Kosgoda turtle hatcheries?

Accepted Answer

Both are community-supported hatcheries on Sri Lanka's southern coast working to protect the same species, but Kosgoda — around 20 kilometres northwest — is one of the oldest established projects in the country and sees slightly higher visitor numbers. Koggala's project is smaller and closer to Galle, making it more accessible for travellers staying in or around that city.
