A day in Yala begins and ends in the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle, but the heart of it is a half-day jeep safari through one of the finest leopard habitats anywhere in the world. This tour collects you from your hotel in Beruwala and takes you south-east to Yala National Park, Sri Lanka's second largest, where dry scrub, open grassland and scattered waterholes give way to some of the country's most reliable wildlife sightings.
Yala sits on the island's southern coast, its flat and gently rolling terrain shaped by a dry, semi-arid climate. Only two of the park's five blocks are open to visitors, and it is Block I, in the west, that draws the attention of trackers and photographers alike for its unusually high concentration of leopards. Beyond the leopards, the park supports a resident elephant population numbering in the hundreds, along with sloth bears, crocodiles, wild water buffalo and a long list of resident and migratory birds. Expect the kind of scenes that define a Yala game drive: leopards stretched out on sun-warmed granite rocks or easing down to a muddy waterhole for a drink, spotted deer and sambar gathered at the water's edge, and wild boar rooting through the leaf litter with a bee-eater watching from a nearby branch.
Your English-speaking chauffeur guide handles the driving throughout, and once inside the park a dedicated jeep and tracker take over for the safari itself, reading tracks and movement to help you understand what you are seeing rather than simply pointing it out. The day runs as a single continuous outing of around nine hours door to door, built around a half-day safari rather than a rushed, hurried loop through the park. A bottle of mineral water per person is provided for the journey.
