Lilly Village Boutique Hotel is the vision of Marie Cassagne, a French interior designer who made Bentota her home. Rather than a single building, it is a small tropical village of four stand-alone properties set among lush greenery, each furnished in her own simple, stylish manner, with a calm, unhurried atmosphere that guests single out again and again.
The hotel stands at Sooriyagoda in Bentota, on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, a short walk inland from Bentota Beach and close to the centre of the town. The beach, the Bentota River and the town's railway station are all within easy reach, and Colombo lies to the north along the coast.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 110 km from the hotel by road, and the drive usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours on the airport and Southern expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the hotel in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Lilly Village Boutique Hotel.
Instead of corridors of identical rooms, the village is made up of separate houses and bungalows with their own names, among them the Lilly Pearl bungalow, Lilly Blue and Lilly Rose, which has a sitting room, a spa room, a den and a spacious bedroom with a generous bathroom. Interiors are deliberately uncluttered and decorated by the owner herself, and there are family rooms for those travelling with children.
Breakfast is served on site, and there is a restaurant and bar, a garden and terrace, a barbecue area and spa treatments for guests who want to slow down further. Wi-Fi is free throughout, bicycles can be hired for exploring the lanes around the village, and the small number of rooms means the service is personal.
The beach and the river are the main draws: swimming and sunbathing on Bentota's long sandy shore, water-skiing and other water sports on the river, and boat rides through the mangroves of the Bentota River. Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's country estate, and Brief Garden, created by his brother Bevis, are both close by, and further along the coast are the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda, the mask makers of Ambalangoda and Galle Fort, an easy day trip. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the hotel.
