Question 1

What is the best way to get around Jaffna city?

Accepted Answer

Tuk-tuks are the most practical option for short hops between landmarks and are easy to find near the fort and market areas. For a full guided city tour, a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver-guide is more comfortable and efficient. Some travellers choose to cycle, as the city is largely flat and distances between key sites are manageable.

Question 2

How long does a Jaffna city tour take?

Accepted Answer

A standard half-day tour of the main city landmarks — the fort, Nallur Kovil, the public library, and the market — takes around four to five hours. Adding a lagoon island such as Nagadeepa or Velanai extends the day to a full eight hours or more. Cruise passengers with limited time ashore can cover the highlights in three to four hours with a well-planned itinerary.

Question 3

Can I visit Nagadeepa Island on a day trip from Jaffna?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Nagadeepa (Nainativu) is typically reached by a short boat ride from Kurikadduwan jetty, about 25 km from Jaffna city. The island holds an important Hindu temple and a Buddhist shrine. The visit is often combined with a Jaffna city tour as a full-day itinerary.

Question 4

What should I wear when visiting temples in Jaffna?

Accepted Answer

Hindu kovils in Jaffna require visitors to remove shoes before entering and to dress modestly — shoulders and knees should be covered. Many sites offer sarong wraps at the entrance for those who arrive unprepared. Men are sometimes asked to remove their shirts inside certain temple sanctuaries, in line with traditional practice.

Question 5

Is there a direct flight from Colombo to Jaffna?

Accepted Answer

Domestic flights operate between Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo and Palaly Airport in Jaffna, cutting the journey to under an hour. Schedules and availability vary seasonally, so it is advisable to book in advance. The train is a slower but scenic alternative, taking six to seven hours on the Yal Devi service.

Question 6

What languages do people speak in Jaffna?

Accepted Answer

Tamil is the primary language spoken in Jaffna and across the northern province. English is understood in hotels, guesthouses, and by most guides, but knowledge of Sinhala is of limited use in this region. Signage in the city is predominantly in Tamil and English.

Question 7

What is the Nallur Festival and when does it take place?

Accepted Answer

The Nallur Festival is a 25-day Hindu religious festival held at the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, usually in August. It features elaborate processions, music, devotional rituals, and fire-walking ceremonies. It is one of the most significant Hindu festivals in Sri Lanka and draws pilgrims from across the country and abroad.

Question 8

Are there good restaurants in Jaffna for tourists?

Accepted Answer

Jaffna has a small but growing range of restaurants catering to visitors, with several guesthouses offering excellent home-cooked Tamil meals. Jaffna crab curry is the signature dish to try. The city's eateries are generally modest and unpretentious — expect generous portions and very fresh seafood at reasonable prices.
