Surfing Elephant is an oceanfront resort on Beach Road in Matara, facing the reef-sheltered swimming bay of Polhena Beach, with coworking, yoga and a surf school. It mixes private rooms with social "Poshtel" dorms, and is built for surfers, remote workers, families and slow travellers who want to stay a while on the south coast, a 15-minute walk from Matara town.
There are three categories of private room and two shared dorms. Every private room has air conditioning and a fan, an en-suite bathroom with a hair dryer and toiletries, a smart TV, a mini fridge and daily housekeeping, and every stay includes use of the coworking space and the wellness areas.
Children under six can share their parents' bed, and guests aged 12 and over count as adults. Check-in is from 2pm and check-out is at 11am.
Pacha Social is the all-day restaurant, serving fresh, seasonal Sri Lankan and South Asian dishes alongside international favourites from breakfast through to dinner. Maison-Tikiri Café and Bar is the place for coffee from Sri Lankan plantations, snacks, and locally produced beer and wine. More venues, including a beach club, are announced as coming soon. For longer stays there is a lifestyle store on site selling organic groceries, wellness essentials, surf gear and locally made goods, and a shared kitchen.
Days are built around the water and the yoga shala. There is a pool, daily yoga, breathwork and regular sound-healing sessions, and a surf school whose local coaches teach all levels on Polhena's gentle break. The resort also runs Sri Lankan coastal cookery classes and small-group craft workshops with local makers. Remote workers get an air-conditioned coworking room with high-speed fibre and Starlink internet, ergonomic seating and a meeting room for up to six. A spa and Ayurveda centre, an ice bath and sauna, a pickleball court and a movement studio are listed by the resort as coming soon, so ask before you travel if they matter to you.
Polhena Beach is across the road. A wide coral reef keeps the water calm enough to swim in for most of the year, which makes it one of the more family-friendly beaches in the south. The surf breaks and village lanes of Madiha are within walking distance. In Matara itself you can walk the ramparts of Matara Fort beside the mouth of the Nilwala River, and the Weherahena temple is a short drive inland. The livelier surf towns of Weligama and Mirissa are about 15 minutes away by road.
Yes. Matara Railway Station is on the coastal line from Colombo and Galle, and the resort is a short tuk-tuk ride from the station.
The resort is about 155 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, and Surfing Elephant puts the journey at around two hours by road using the expressway. The easiest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Surfing Elephant, which takes you to the door.
It suits remote workers and long-stay travellers who want reliable internet beside the sea, beginner and intermediate surfers, and families who want a calm beach to swim from. Solo travellers who like company will find it social, especially in the dorms. If you want a quiet, formal resort, this is not it. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Matara.
