Akway Resort is a small mountain hideaway of 17 rooms at Lower Blackwood, Nikapotha, in the green highlands between Beragala and Haputale. The whole property is built to face the view: each room has a balcony looking across the ranges, and the same panorama follows you to the restaurant, the terraces and the infinity pool. Evenings are the time to be outside, when golden mist drifts over the peaks.
All 17 rooms look out on the mountains. Each comes with free Wi-Fi, a tea and coffee station, an in-room safe, a hairdryer, a digital alarm clock, an iron and board, an IDD phone, bathrobes and a choice from the pillow menu.
Bed layouts vary across the hotel: five doubles with a king-size bed, four twins with two single beds, six triples and two quadruples. That makes it practical for families and small groups, and an extra bed can be added. Let us know who is travelling so we can request the right layout.
Meals centre on Flavors Restaurant & Bar, which overlooks the mountains and cooks Sri Lankan and international dishes with vegetables from the resort's organic garden. Coffee is served in the lounge, drinks at the pool bar, and room service is available. For something different, the Bavaria Garden is a beer garden with a 180° outlook and a waterfall within earshot, while the 360° Sky Pavilion hosts campfire barbecues under the night sky. Guests are greeted with organic welcome drinks.
Time at the resort tends to pass between the infinity pool, which faces the mountain range, the wellness spa with its qualified therapists, and indoor games. There is no separate children's pool. The hotel also takes guests out to meet its neighbours in the surrounding villages:
Laundry is available, and a doctor can be called if you need one.
Haputale town is about 4 kilometres away in a straight line. From there the road winds up through the tea to Dambatenne Tea Factory and Lipton's Seat, the viewpoint where Thomas Lipton once looked over his estates; go early, before the cloud arrives. Day trips reach Diyaluma Falls, Bambarakanda Falls, the country's tallest waterfall, and Horton Plains National Park with its walk to World's End. Bandarawela is about 12 kilometres off in a straight line, and Ella and the Nine Arch Bridge about 19. The Pekoe Trail also crosses the surrounding tea country. To compare other hotels in the area, see our Haputale stays.
The closest stations on the Main Line are Idalgashinna and Haputale, each about 4 kilometres away in a straight line, and many guests arrive on the scenic hill-country train. The last stretch of road is too tight for large vehicles, so coaches and other oversized vehicles stop at Beragala Junction, where the resort's shuttle takes over. Rooms for drivers and guides can be arranged, subject to availability.
Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out is at 11:00, and the hotel offers early arrival and late departure free of charge when rooms allow. From Bandaranaike International Airport, plan on most of a day by road. We can arrange that transfer, or a private car and driver for your whole trip.
