Akway Resort

Beragala, Sri Lanka

Akway Resort is a small mountain hideaway of 17 rooms at Lower Blackwood, Nikapotha, in the green highlands between Beragala and Haputale. The whole property is built to face the view: each room has a balcony looking across the ranges, and the same panorama follows you to the restaurant, the terraces and the infinity pool. Evenings are the time to be outside, when golden mist drifts over the peaks.

Which room suits me?

All 17 rooms look out on the mountains. Each comes with free Wi-Fi, a tea and coffee station, an in-room safe, a hairdryer, a digital alarm clock, an iron and board, an IDD phone, bathrobes and a choice from the pillow menu.

  • Deluxe Mountain View (16 rooms): 364 sq ft overall, with a 264 sq ft bedroom, a 48 sq ft bathroom with a separate hot and cold shower, a 52 sq ft balcony and a 32-inch LED satellite TV. Ground-floor rooms in this category are an easy choice if you prefer to avoid stairs.
  • Super Deluxe Mountain View (1 room): the single Premium Deluxe room runs to 424 sq ft, with a 300 sq ft bedroom, a 64 sq ft bathroom with both a bathtub and a separate shower, and a 60 sq ft balcony. It adds a 50-inch LED TV, a digital scale and bath slippers.

Bed layouts vary across the hotel: five doubles with a king-size bed, four twins with two single beds, six triples and two quadruples. That makes it practical for families and small groups, and an extra bed can be added. Let us know who is travelling so we can request the right layout.

Where will I eat and drink?

Meals centre on Flavors Restaurant & Bar, which overlooks the mountains and cooks Sri Lankan and international dishes with vegetables from the resort's organic garden. Coffee is served in the lounge, drinks at the pool bar, and room service is available. For something different, the Bavaria Garden is a beer garden with a 180° outlook and a waterfall within earshot, while the 360° Sky Pavilion hosts campfire barbecues under the night sky. Guests are greeted with organic welcome drinks.

What can I do here?

Time at the resort tends to pass between the infinity pool, which faces the mountain range, the wellness spa with its qualified therapists, and indoor games. There is no separate children's pool. The hotel also takes guests out to meet its neighbours in the surrounding villages:

  • Milk a cow with a local dairy farmer, then take tea or coffee with fresh cream.
  • Make hoppers for a village breakfast in the paddy fields, or grind spices and cook lunch in an outdoor kitchen.
  • Watch cinnamon bark being peeled into quills, and see how village tappers turn rubber milk into sheets.
  • Trek past small falls and natural pools to a hidden waterfall.
  • Attend a pooja at the Naga Pattini Devalaya, a hilltop Hindu temple in Haputale known for its carvings.

Laundry is available, and a doctor can be called if you need one.

What is close by?

Haputale town is about 4 kilometres away in a straight line. From there the road winds up through the tea to Dambatenne Tea Factory and Lipton's Seat, the viewpoint where Thomas Lipton once looked over his estates; go early, before the cloud arrives. Day trips reach Diyaluma Falls, Bambarakanda Falls, the country's tallest waterfall, and Horton Plains National Park with its walk to World's End. Bandarawela is about 12 kilometres off in a straight line, and Ella and the Nine Arch Bridge about 19. The Pekoe Trail also crosses the surrounding tea country. How do I get there?

The closest stations on the Main Line are Idalgashinna and Haputale, each about 4 kilometres away in a straight line, and many guests arrive on the scenic hill-country train. The last stretch of road is too tight for large vehicles, so coaches and other oversized vehicles stop at Beragala Junction, where the resort's shuttle takes over. Rooms for drivers and guides can be arranged, subject to availability.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out is at 11:00, and the hotel offers early arrival and late departure free of charge when rooms allow. From Bandaranaike International Airport, plan on most of a day by road. We can arrange that transfer, or a private car and driver for your whole trip.
